Didn't Polanski commit to standing at the by election of Starmer quit? Sure he said this a few months ago. Of course he was riding high back then. I'd be less confident of him winning today.

I think he may well run. Will be an interesting contest. Lab will hold it in all likelihood but they aren't going to like the inquest into their shenanigans it will bring.

I think people have probably heard it enough from me so forgive me if I don't repeat the essay but in short it was a fraud with the backing of a compliant media. Revenge of the centrist dads type thing except they forgot that they would actually have to run a country at the end of it. Oops...

I don't think Starmer and media were in step with each other. He wouldn't have so many issues during his premiership if so. I do think there is a natural dislike of the left from many of the tabloids, and Corbyn certainly didn't help himself, so there was natural inclination to support Starmer as an alternative - especially as they saw the Conservative government fall apart whilst Reform were not strong enough to be able to challenge for the win.

Not remotely the subject of the OP which people are discussing. The idea that stepping down after 11 years, having been PM, and no longer being PM, is some sort of disgraceful dereliction of duty, is plain stupid.

Do I buy that the Starmer project was a bit of a stitch up of the Labour left by the centrist (blue labour?!) faction of the party? Absolutely. Do I think the media was complicit in it? No, that just feels a bit silly given how unsympathetic the entire media has been towards him.

They were literally in lockstep! They got invited to the secret meetings in 2018! They told us this because they thought it was smart. I think you're onto something with your second point except I think they propped the Tories up until they had Starmer ready. I wonder why ...

Is that any different to the Blair project in the late 1990s? He worked hard to get the tabloids on side. And was better at winning people over than Starmer ever was and will be. I think in a perfect world for them the Tories would still be in charge. Or Reform. But they had to balance optimism with realism.

I think they were gentler with him than Corbyn and couldn't really deliver the killer blow before he became PM because they knew the Tories and Reform had no chance. It was easier for them once he became Prime Minister, and they definitely took the opportunity.

I'd say he was somewhat used by the media, who were soft on him whilst he was gutting Labour of the left, only to turn on him once that goal had been achieved and his purpose had been served.

Imo it's a bit of a problem when you have a political project that tells the media that the plan is to lie to win power and then screw the party members over and the media go along with it because (a) they thought it was clever and (b) those kitchen islands weren't going to pay for themselves and this was going to help keep the 'right' people in charge It's not really democracy is it. Nope. It didn't seem to occur to any journalist to ask them what the plan was ahead of the election. You'd think journalists would want to know wouldn't you? Shenanigans!
