It's been a few years since I've travelled there for a game, and I remember it always used to be poky and ramshackle in the 90s, but they've obviously done a bit of work on it since then.
Just looking around the outside it's such a jumbled mix of odd bits jutting out, that tiny side stand that you could pole vault up on top of, curves clashing with straight and sloped lines, that awful juxtaposition of red brick, tinny cladding and yellow and green plastic bits. Yuck!
It's clearly cleaner than it was, but it's just such a tacky looking little hole, is it not? |  |

Yes, 'pig ugly little dump' is a bit tongue in cheek and on the harsh side, I know.
What struck me about it was that it was architecturally such a jumbled mess, and the finish (red brick/cladding/yellow and green splodges) just looks really cheap and tacky. The tiny side stand just looks wrong.
Aside from that it is clean, and has a (very little) bit of character compared to a modern bowl, I suppose. I think your characterisation of fitting in with the retail units is bang on, actually. |

Thats my understanding too, although I'd add that the size of the City stand was limited by the road outside. That road has since been made less important but the bigger one (with the retail stuff) which was constructed 10-15 years back*. So in theory, (if we ever got good again) we would have more freedom to build over the old, now semi-defunct road.
Overall, I think CR has bags of charm - yes it's a bit 'big box retail' but bear in mind that the retail stuff and new flats all came *after* CR - it used be in the middle of fck all, or was when I started going. Its developed orginically bit by bit, the old school way - surprised to see you brutes ignore that, as its true of your place too innit?
As for the insurance thing, didn;t you lot end up effectively getting your north and south stands paid for by a debt write off via Aviva? Not certain on this - I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong!
*maybe longer - old people always underestimate time - I had such a shock when I saw De La Soul's 3 ft high and rising was made in 1989, when I thought it was the late 90s! [Post edited 3 Sep 11:58]

I was suprised it was all of 42 years ago. I assume Mr Chases's building company threw it together with some left over concrete and bricks over a quiet weekend. If they had thought bigger at the time, the council could have re-routed Carrow Road to enable a bigger stand, as they ended up doing that anyway a few years later. Re Aviva, that was a straightforward business loan to rebuild North and South. Then, relegation, the debt and the loss of the tv deal proved too much financially for the club. No shenanigans like up the road. To be honest I do not mind Carrow road, it has it's own identity in a sea of obscure identikit bowls. You know why CR used to be in the middle of know where? Fair enough, Aviva wrote off about £20m when we went bust. Ooops. I believe they were also one of the insurers for Norwich’s oh so unfortunate burning down of their old worn out stand, but I’m not sure anyone actually knows.
