Just a post as we always talk about individual players and the hierarchy above.
I'll admit I was a little underwhelmed by his appointment, not really sure why, maybe because we all get swept away with football consensus on people and in turn it gives you a preconceived idea on who he is.
But, I have to say, so far I like the cut of his jib, he comes across very articulate, seems to have a good understanding of the PL and the threats we face, I love his enthusiasm, he's really bought into the club and area like McKenna, and I get the impression he feels like he's struck gold getting this job, which can only be a huge plus.
Second half against Utd you could argue was a little naive, however when Bruno is on that form it's hard to play against, and Liverpool was undone by pure brilliance, albeit we could've done better on an individual level.
Bu overall, I'm impressed, he's gone up in my estimations, obviously time will tell, but we seemed to have found someone not a million miles away from McKenna.

I'll admit, I was underwhelmed that was the direction we went with O'Neil.
It seemed unambitious.
He has had incredible backing in terms of player recruitment and is working off a fabulous foundation laid by McKenna.
I think there will always be a "what if?" if McKenna had this squad in the PL vs his League 1 and Championship all-stars that we had last time round.
O'Neil should do better than McKenna did, simply based on the maturity of the club and the quality of the first XI and depth of the squad vs last time round.
Pleasantly surprised so far, but it still feels like a true identity for the team has to be found. |
No what ifs from me. I'll bet KM is happy to see the foundations he laid being carried on well, thus far at the very least. He made his decision to walk away for personal reasons, and I'm sure pretty much everyone here will wish him the very best of luck in whatever he decides to do next.
I could wonder what the two " Sirs " might do with the current backing, and I was around to see teams play for both. That's a rabbit hole I have no intention of going down. Times change, constantly looking back can give you a crick neck. |  | | |

Certainly hard to fairly judge someone with such a small sample. Plus you have to take into account the backing he’s had and calibre of player we’ve been able to secure.
Rest of the season could go absolutely pear shaped, or comfortable survival. To date though, I’m delighted with the points haul, and the exciting style. |  | | |

Do we need an ‘identity’ though? All we need from O’Neil is to ensure we finish 17th and upwards. By hook or by crook. |  |

I was very happy with his appointment, as I thought he would make us solid and hard to beat. The combination of that and the quality we signed made me think we would stay up.
So far, we haven't been anywhere near as organised and solid as I expected. I thought he made massive tactical mistakes against Man U (slow to react in the second half) and Liverpool. Other clubs have shown how to play against them last season and this season, and while they will both finish top 6, they're not great teams at the moment (the results show this).
The other two games were much better, but still a bit more open against Palace; it was a noticeable improvement. 6 points from those games is a great start, and I do believe he will get the defensive side right; with the attacking talent we have, we will end up having a decent season. I was not for his appointment given the Wolves debacle, but to me it is looking promising, however it is so early in the season to make categoric judgements.
If we had made a poor start, an OP titled" thoughts on GON so far" would have produced outraged replies as being too early, support the manager etc. So to be consistent, a decent start should also be treated with the same caution. | | | |

I didnt know a lot about his character before, he wasn’t immediately my first choice but quickly understood where we at and how he might compliment that. I like how he has handled himself, he is media friendly which helps with rapour with fans. He is certainly building and building upon an identity that was there, it is a different team and different capabilities in the squad but impressive how we are not endlessly talking about gelling.
Lots done, very much more to do. How he deals with pressure as it ramps, with the media, and with players when they are not performing or getting game time will be a measure.
