| Thoughts on GON so far 13:29 - Sep 14 with 3321 views | hype313 | Just a post as we always talk about individual players and the hierarchy above. I'll admit I was a little underwhelmed by his appointment, not really sure why, maybe because we all get swept away with football consensus on people and in turn it gives you a preconceived idea on who he is. But, I have to say, so far I like the cut of his jib, he comes across very articulate, seems to have a good understanding of the PL and the threats we face, I love his enthusiasm, he's really bought into the club and area like McKenna, and I get the impression he feels like he's struck gold getting this job, which can only be a huge plus. Second half against Utd you could argue was a little naive, however when Bruno is on that form it's hard to play against, and Liverpool was undone by pure brilliance, albeit we could've done better on an individual level. Bu overall, I'm impressed, he's gone up in my estimations, obviously time will tell, but we seemed to have found someone not a million miles away from McKenna. Long may it continue. | |

| Thoughts on GON so far on 13:36 - Sep 14 with 2644 views | burnbudgiesburn | Ipswich is a dream job really. Unless we completely stink the place out and see no signs of improvement/cohesion anywhere - this must be one of the very few jobs where the likelyhood is that he would keep the job even if relegated. That must be particularly relevant for him given how he kept Bournemouth up, taking over just days after they got thumped 9-0 at Liverpool - only to be jettisoned for another manager. | | | |
| Thoughts on GON so far on 14:11 - Sep 14 with 2516 views | hunty21 | Hes passed the pressure game with a win . I imagine if we lose at palace then you would be looking at this slightly differently in the liverpool and utd games as poor performances where mistakes are costing us, at the moment we are lasting games alot better especially in 2nd half which is encouraging as before we faded in games previously | | | |
| Thoughts on GON so far on 14:25 - Sep 14 with 2465 views | RobTheMonk | Overwhelming success so far. We lost to a ridiculously expensive Liverpool squad and Man United at old Trafford. Both teams in Champions League. We've won our other two games against teams you'd expect might be on and around the bottom half. The football is quite exciting and we've got some proper livewires in the team. He talks well and looks quite happy to deal with the tougher side. I fully expect us to have another busy window in Jan too. | | | |
| Thoughts on GON so far on 14:33 - Sep 14 with 2421 views | _CliveBaker_ | Its such fine lines isn't it. If Clarke's goal against Sunderland doesn't go in, or Nunez doesn't make that block at 1-1, or Disasi doesn't make that tackle / red on Saturday. Could be sat here on 0 points and people are asking how long he's got. That's all if's, but's and never happened's though, and I'm not saying we deserve 0 points. GON has done a good job so far. Bought well which he will have had some degree of involvement with. Seemingly integrated us well too. We look dangerous going forward, a bit susceptible defensively, probably look like a squad that's spent the best part of £200m with not much of it at the back. We've been competitive though, Sunderland and Palace were tight even before the red. United was tight until the hour mark, Liverpool hard to tell owing to the start. We're never going to spend what we've spent and compete with Liverpool and Arsenal, but I've got a reasonably confidence level that we're not far off a few of those lower end established sides now. Personally I've found us good to watch, much better than most of last season (and the one before, understandably). He talks well, I like his positivity. I think he's a steady appointment, not one who might go to a top club at some point but also not one who will flop massively. That was probably quite sensible really. Ultimately we've got 6 points on the board. If we end the season 17th upwards it's mission accomplished. | | | |

The other side of fine lines is if the Maguire handball had been adjudged culpable, who knows how that game might have ended? Or Scherpen's hand had been just a fraction higher and in the right place to deflect Izak's first shot wide. We could be up with Hull. For me, things have pretty much evened up so far.

| Thoughts on GON so far on 14:47 - Sep 14 with 2339 views | Chrisd | If he gets us 17th by the end of the season, then he's done a magnificent job in my eyes. Got to admit that I was underwhelmed by his appointment in the summer, but I am happy to eat my own hat if we avoid relegation. | |

| Thoughts on GON so far on 14:49 - Sep 14 with 2324 views | StochesStotasBlewe | I warmed to him during pre season after being underwhelmed by his appointment initially, gave my head a wobble and said to myself that this could be a good fit for him and for the club. As has been mentioned above, he comes across very well so far, the football has been pretty decent to watch at times and given time and our continued support, I feel like we are on the right trajectory, time will tell however. I just wish he hadn’t got such a great set of Turkey teeth as Mrs SSB comments on them regularly and I’m starting to think that she might be secretly hoping to whisk me off somewhere to have my disastrous molars seen to. | |

I know it’s not Champions League but Sunderland and Palace are both also in European action this season. So our first four matches have been against teams in Europe. Six points not too shabby then Edit: changed Championship to Champions [Post edited 14 Sep 16:57]

Like you I was underwhelmed but maybe that was more to do with the disappointment of losing McKenna. Have warmed to him a lot and I think that we have a good chance of avoiding relegation.

Apart from Liverpool, we have scored the last goal in every game, usually in the final few minutes - should not be overlooked.
| Thoughts on GON so far on 15:33 - Sep 14 with 2113 views | ElderGrizzly | I'll admit, I was underwhelmed that was the direction we went with O'Neil. It seemed unambitious. He has had incredible backing in terms of player recruitment and is working off a fabulous foundation laid by McKenna. I think there will always be a "what if?" if McKenna had this squad in the PL vs his League 1 and Championship all-stars that we had last time round. O'Neil should do better than McKenna did, simply based on the maturity of the club and the quality of the first XI and depth of the squad vs last time round. Pleasantly surprised so far, but it still feels like a true identity for the team has to be found. | | | |

9 premier league teams are in Europe this season, so that's not quite the flex it once was! As others have said, it's very fine margins but i'm pleased with our approach to the start of the season and the way that GO'N carries himself.
| Thoughts on GON so far on 15:50 - Sep 14 with 2022 views | Dubtractor | All good so far, and I've been impressed by what he has said too, getting the right balance between praise and constructive criticism after games like Saturday. As someone else said, we're a great job really, compared to his previous clubs. A properly supportive club structure and fanbase, well backed financially, an appreciation that there will be bumps in the road etc. For the record, I was in the 'underwhelmed, but saw the rationale in the appointment' school of thought in the summer. | |

| Agreed on 15:53 - Sep 14 with 2009 views | Dyland | Said at the time that it was a pretty prosaic appointment, and that wasn't a bad thing. When it seemingly came down to GoN or OgS the fact plenty were clamouring for the latter demonstrated you don't need any insight or general clue to tell everyone on the socials your febrile, feeble minded opinion. Seems one can also be a clueless clonk and still be elected to positions of great power, continue to post gubbins on the socials, and the turkeys, tvats and tosspots will lap it up like porn stars slurping spunk. | |

| Thoughts on GON so far on 16:41 - Sep 14 with 1770 views | Backtoblue78A | Difficult not to like his impact in the context of McKenna's PL season. It does make you wonder whether 24/25 was a completely wasted opportunity, brought about by an overly sentimental decision by Ashton. It does kind of tarnish the McKenna era in terms of achievement within the bigger plan, but someone had to dig us out of the post Evans era and I guess KM found his level. A point at Everton would be exceptional. | | | |
| Thoughts on GON so far on 16:53 - Sep 14 with 1712 views | ITFC_Essex | I must admit, I like others never rated him anywhere else, but was open minded when he was appointed. So far, O'Neill ball does have me worried at times, it does feel like we play suicidal football when we don't need to and commit too much forward and while that didn't really work against Manure or Liverpool, who for the sake of balance are far from their best, it did against both Sunderland and Palace, so hats off to him so far, because thats a good return from 4 games, two of which were away, in any league, let alone this one. I agree in part with the mindset, and how we are set up this time, I just don't rate our bench to carry it over the line in the "business end" of the game, thankfully I have been wrong about that twice. We're a forward, winger and couple of defenders short in my view. I do think we might need a plan B when it comes to moments when say we have the lead and times running out, and try to be a bit more conservative in our play. I think our right side is weaker than our other areas, and that's something we need to figure out. | |

| Thoughts on GON so far on 17:08 - Sep 14 with 1642 views | Gary_Knows | I thought he was a good appointment from the start, track record of keeping 2 sides up and looking at the realistic options out there at the time, always felt he was the best one. From what I remember from his time at Wolves - I always felt he seemed very emotional after games (from the little I watched of them). He seems have simmered down here and is very honest with his thoughts on the game. Do feel though that if he carries on with the positive spin after poor performances (so far I think all of his post match conferences have been spot on) then it’ll begin to grate with fans - but hopefully we don’t get to that point. Gary O’Neils blue and white army. | |

I don't disagree at all, although I think United would find a way with or without that penalty. I take your point though. We are where we deserve to be. I think its just the inevitable contrast to last season, where while results weren't always there we just looked a level above pretty much everyone else for the most part. I remember being at the early defeat at Preston, it was stark how much better we were than them, albeit not with a result on the day. And that wasn't one of the better performances by any stretch. So we should've been with our squad, we're just not going to see dominance like it this season, unsurprisingly against such better quality. The margins are going to be so fine against all of the bottom half PL sides. Falling on the right side of them when it counts is good habit to get into, and we've made a good start.

"I think there will always be a "what if?" if McKenna had this squad in the PL vs his League 1 and Championship all-stars that we had last time round." I think we had to have that season to almost dip our toes in, see what's needed and then come back stronger off the back of it. As we have seen, albeit still early days, at Coventry where they're going through the same process we did two years ago. They may need to go back down and regroup to tackle the challenge differently in a couple of year's time.

Very different circumstances this time. Our 3 year revenues were L1, non parachute Champ, PL last time. Now its PL, parachute Champ, PL. Deeper pockets and starting from a much higher base this time around. I don't think McKenna played Al-Hamadi or Hirst out of sentiment, hence he put Delap straight in. We went up with a squad largely assembled in L1, it was never going to cut it in the PL and that's not a reflection on KM. You only have to look at where they are now.

I have raised my expectation this season and expect/hope for 40+ points and hopefully 15th or higher.
