I put together points charts for each of our seven season in the Premiership/EPL (including this one). The red line shows our actual points this season, plus a grey projection based on the average points per game. This is our joint second-best start along with 92/32 (surprisingly, the best was 93/94). The various shades of blue are survival seasons, yellow are relegation (because yellow=bad). Also lines to show max, min and average points required for survival, and I've indicated the points we had after 38 games for the 3 seasons in a 22-team league.
Obviously extrapolating at this stage is a huge assumption, but might be interesting to see how that changes as we get further into the season.

Wow. I hadn’t realised that McKenna’s season in the PL was worse than anything we’ve had before. Even those seasons where we shared 9 goals with ManU or everything fell apart after we qualified for Europe.

The three 90s seasons had an extra four matches though. And we were probably good for 2/3 of the first one before the long drawn-out decline.
The other bit of information needed is something that reflects points per position for each PL season - because it seems to have got a lot lower at the bottom end as the league got more stratified. |  |

Interesting that we went on a phenomenal run in 01/02 between the 17th and 25th games which brought us up to pretty much the same points total at the same stage as the season before. Just a shame we couldn’t keep that going to get us over the line. Indeed to remember a 6-0 loss against Liverpool knocked the stuffing out of us. |  | | |
