That's the issue. For all the praise, only Bellingham, Kane and, on current form, Gordon are good enough to achieve the aim of winning the World Cup. They're the only ones who would have even a chance of making the Spanish first XI. The rest would be lucky to make the bench. How Spain have managed to pull so far clear should shine a spotlight on the English academy set up and coaching. |
I think it is also notable that those 3 players all play abroad as well. I don't think the Premier League is as strong as it once was despite still having much of the world's best talent. | |

Whilst that is true, they do have a very good midfield with real strength in depth. England did very well to live with them for as long as they did but even that required plenty of help from the Spanish defence.
Very encouraging from England aside from the first and last 20 minutes of the match. |

I can't recall us really looking like scoring and I thought Spain saw it out quite comfortably.
It was only from when we scored an excellent goal to equalise until we missed the penalty that England looked particularly impressive. Either side of that Spain were either dominant (the first 20 minutes or so especially) or comfortable. | |

I'd agree with that but it's something that's been clear since 2010 with Spain's previous world cup win. Technically they're miles ahead of everyone except maybe France, not just England. Tactically now just like 2010 Spain are just like watching Barcelona. The formula and the ability to carry it out makes it look a different sport.
It was only when we showed directness, quick passing and using technical players on the wings could we get through or round them. Rogers and Garner coming on in positions they wouldn't normally play at club level shows we're still trying to shoe horn decent players into the wrong positions. Spain brought on players who upped their game in positions where they were looking a tad weaker. |  | | |
