"The estimate of the total amount of rubble in Gaza is 61m tonnes. It is approximately 20 times the amount of rubble generated in all wars across the world over the last 18 years"

It is very clear that this Israeli government has gone beyond a justified response to the crimes of Hamas in October 2023 and is intent only on continuing to make life as difficult as possible for Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank.
Such a level of fanaticism makes it very hard to see any good resolution or a lasting peace. The government don't even seem to recognise that perpetual war is weakening Israeli society and it's international standing.

Absolutely right on the point about weakening Israeli society but it's also now having direct effects on the populace:
"Israel is facing weeks of water shortages after an exceptional algae bloom crippled much of its desalination capacity, in a crisis scientists say was triggered when Israeli attacks destroyed much of Gaza’s wastewater infrastructure, causing a massive discharge of untreated sewage."

It looks like a WW2 style carpet bombing.
It needs a UN led reconstruction mission, but of course there is no way Israel would allow such a thing.

Looking at it in detail, from what I find out, the Tel al-Sultan, Rafah area that looked like it was carpet bombed was a small city on the border with Egypt near Sinai. It is within the "buffer" area Israel has created, was depopulated and then systematically levelled. So at least it was not carpet-bombed. It is different in nature to areas that have been destroyed directly by active warfare, shells and bombs etc.

Well that’s reassuring. My uneducated eye thought those images looked pretty bad, especially in view of the quote that Stokie pulled from the article and lead with at the top of the thread. But my eye clearly isn’t as trained as yours.
Anyway, I hope there are enough supplies of patches in Palestine’s equivalent of Boots the Chemist for anyone that may have sustained nasty scratches.

I realise your comment about Boots is facetious but the reality is a tad more horrific.

You gotta feel sorry for normal Israelis, don't you? Even the Palestinians' old waste is out to get them.
Praying that Israel gets its water cleaned up quickly so the settlers can enjoy their clean swimming pools again during this warm weather.

I don't need to be told about the real extent of the horrors the people of Palestine are facing.
I can assure you that these reports - which people are posting on this forum - are extremely sanitised and very palatable compared to the actual situation.
Sadly, sometimes people's sensibilities are moved more by sarcasm than real images. What else can I do without crossing the line of antisemitism?

There's literally hours of footage of surgeons' testimony detailing how the most moral army in the world kill children with bullet holes in both their chests and heads. I've held it back for the last 3 years because I've been asked to. Alternatively, I can share an equal quantity of Israeli prison abuse images of Palestinian men, women and children. Or perhaps some footage of Israeli MKs celebrating in the Knesset following rulings permitting sexual torture and death of Palestinians of all ages.

interestingly a un study estimates that up to the end 2025 17.2 million tonnes of rubble have been generated in the parts of ukraine still under government control. so the assertion in the quote seems unlikely.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

ha, nice sarcasm. I really hope that you don't think I am downplaying this for any reason other than accuracy. As sarcasm is considered a wit, do you really find the Gaza situation witty ? ? ? ?

Dark humour is as old as war itself. The intent of the comment is perfectly obvious and entirely appropriate, even if not to your taste.

It did seem a surprising quote given the Ukraine situation but assumed that was more targeted. I had no reason to disbelieve it from the article.
I've not seen the UN report you've cited.
The images of the destruction still speak for themselves in my opinion.

I did not mind his humour to be fair. If my clarification brings forth a sarcastic comment, I've no problem with it and no doubt deserve it. Sadly I would think that everything in the Israelis buffer zone they have created is being razed to the ground.

I did wonder about that. Plenty of cities have been largely destroyed there. Not to mention those under Russian control.

it's in the 2nd para, but not perhaps the most exciting reading i've come across.

Whether it's necessary or not, let me clarify a couple of points:
Sarcasm is probably the lowest form of wit, but I guess it's a question of delivery. But anyway, the situation in Palestine is no laughing matter. I have black Americans, North African Muslims, white Europeans, Indian Hindus and Pakistani Muslims and even Sephardic Jews in my immediate family. I also currently live in France. I'm more anti-hatred than pro-peace and generally have disdain for all politicians of all stripes in all countries. My impartiality can be mistaken (by the ignorant and extremist) for being a supporter or apologist for certain leaders. I come here in frustration, desperation and even anger - but always in peace.
I wasn't having a go at you with regards to your comments about Palestine, I just used your post to vent my frustration at what these poor people have lived through since 1948, 1967 and ever since.

Just looks like cost-effective site clearance to me for all the “Peace Board’s” future developments
We’ve seen some stuff previously similar to this, but this just rams home the scale of what’s been going on. I don’t understand why the state of Israel isn’t an international pariah.

"I don’t understand why the state of Israel isn’t an international pariah."
To understand and then express why the state of Israel isn’t an international pariah will have you falling foul of the IHRA's definition of antisemitism. It's very simple - that's why everyone goes along with it.

Few areas on the planet have been so thoroughly bombarded in recent conflicts as Gaza. Probably only Mariupol comes close.
In comparison with Second World War concentrations - or, when it comes to artillery, First World War ones - modern warfare really does not pulverise whole areas in the same way, albeit individual bombs and shell are larger, but rely more upon accuracy than volume.
Gaza is a very concentrated area, which has been smashed a number of times since the Second Intifada began, with the blockade giving limited chance to rebuild in between.

Please don't feel the need to provide "interesting reading" about the suffering of a different people in a different part of the world, it's not necessary. Your "Yeah, but Russia" posts speak volumes about the humanity and compassion you show to the suffering of people depending on their nationality, faith or race.
