America is lost - part 3757345 06:25 - Oct 9 with 2900 viewsElderGrizzly

Casually live streaming an execution on American soil.

What an utterly appalling country it has become

I'd be interested to hear what our across the pond brethren think of this or to give us an idea how this monstrosity is landing locally.
I know one poster has stated his support for Trump et al but is this a step too far regardless of whether you're MAGA or not?

"Look, I don't wanna be the same as everybody else. That's why I'm a Mod, see?"

to live stream it is wild, and incredibly american. But if anything gives the terrible human that carried out the initial attack more of a platform/ability to be celebrated by like minded individuals.

Do it "behind closed doors"

MAGA and 'step too far' do not compute. If you support them/'Him' (shudder) now, you always will. It's a cult.

There are a few American Republican voters in my sphere and most are not MAGA nuts and will at lest acknowledge reservations with Trump. But they insist that the Democrat offerings are that much worse that they felt no choice. With such diametrically opposed, entrenched and tribal sides these days the pool of floating voters in the US right now must be miniscule. It's like having a choice between Green or Reform and nothing else. (In their eyes anyway)

The mainstream democrats are so vanilla that I struggle to see what is so objectionable about them.

They don't recognise the reality of the democrats, they fear a caricature created in their heads/ on their tv networks. See also Labour

I'm inclined to agree but social media hyperbole is winning the war. It's deranged commies vs freedom lovers on their feed all day long.

The American Primary system does not help - gives the fringe activist loons an opportunity to whittle it down to the worst candidate, leaving the wider electorate with a crap choice.

Well, like any democratic tool, it would work better if enough people actually participated.

From our perspective, yes.

But for someone on the right in America, who worships the myth of rugged, self-sufficient frontiersmen and abhors any kind of government interference in their lives, our world is alarmingly socialist, horribly atheist and seemingly unable to fend for ourselves (requiring US support at every turn).

Their Overton Window is so far across in comparison with ours, it's quite hard to comprehend from either position.

Buyer beware.

If you vote for Farage we'll get our own version of Hegseth for a very reasonable 30p

Surely you're describing libertarians rather than conservatives though? Trump and co most certainly DO want to tell people how to live their lives (don't be gay, or trans, or non-Christian, and non-white-Anglo-Saxon).

I’ve said it before, it’s quite easy to fall into the trap that Americans are like us. They’re not at all. It’s a very different outlook and way of life over there (from my limited experiences). We’ve a lot more in common with other NW Europeans even though we all have different national languages. Especially the Dutch.

I don’t think you can put Americans as a bloc though. Working with them, they are aptly great people - they probably have more diverse backgrounds and views than we do in the UK. Even some of the states are miles apart in their outlook, eg typically in New York they have a more global/outward looking view than say the Midwest. I think their two party system (much like ours) just means many views aren’t catered for politically. Like us, a lot of them vote for who as they see ‘the least worst option’.

Some of the Hispanics vote republican as they escaped oppression in communist regimes like Cuba and Venezuela. It really makes Europe seem less diverse when you spend time over there. Imo of course.

I haven't read the thread but isn't this just something that is designed to shore up the vote in the mid-term elections?

Agreed you can’t. And having lived there briefly I met all sorts. But even the ones with similar outlooks were quite different. There’s something more independent/enterprising/resourceful that we don’t have here. And that’s in a good way. You want a new barn or building on your land? Fk it, let’s get the neighbours round and build it next week. We’ll provide the BBQ and drinks. It gets done

There are similarities but also a lot of differences even with those Americans most aligned to us. And yes of course you get all sorts as there are millions of them. I’ve always felt Europeans are much more natural bedfellows for us.

I think that falling in with Iran and Afghanistan as the only places doing public executions, is a bit bigger than an election ploy. Its outright fascist authoritarianism.

They are only personally libertarian. Other people all have to conform with their demands.
