Town fans saying we shouldn’t give Man Ci£y any abuse on Saturday… 07:22 - Oct 13 with 4582 viewsITFC_Forever

Yes, we should.

As should fans of every club they play.

The whole of football needs to let them know how reviled they are and that this isn’t going away,
If there’s no response to them, they’ll think everyone’s forgotten about it and they can get away with it. The authorities will think the same.

They can’t be allowed to get away with it…. And for those who are saying it doesn’t affect us - it does. This season for a start, given their potential relegation. And the club they have become in the last 15 years is built on lies and cheating - if they hadn’t have done that; they’d be the same old accident-prone club they’ve always been.

Think Man City fans know exactly what most football fans think of them. And know deep down that this will not go away.

Man City fans won’t care what we think of them their anger is currently targeted towards what they call the Red Cartel that is Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool as well as the PL.

I do think that most Town players and staff would rather the fans sing more Ipswich related songs to encourage them than sing about the other teams cheating.

On balance, support the Town - don't spend 90 mins berating City fans. Not their fault.

I'd go further. The ire should be directed at City owners and those complicit and also the Premier league who have laughably taken so long to deal with this issue.

City fans are planning a massive show of defiant doubling-down at the game with us, with banners, inflatables, fancy-dress, etc. Think we're going to be under a lot of pressure and owe it to the rest of the league to give them a bit back.

Personally, as a Town fan I find myself in a situation where I can, to some degree, understand what City fans might be going through.

I will continue to show support for Ipswich on the pitch but I do, still, have an issue with the whole Ashton/ Farage situation. I'm not conflating the two situations - just can see that City fans will continue to support their team on the pitch, regardless. As I will as a Town fan, even though I have very strong views on Ashton and how that was handled. Ultimately, the Club is bigger than any one person and will be here long after Ashton and I are gone. I support the Club. I suspect many City fans will feel the same and will continue to show their support, even if they know what is what.

Anyways, not saying that as Town fans we shouldn't show our anger and annoyance to the City/ Prem league situation.

Just my personal perspective on it - that's all.

If we were bought out by a authoritarian nation state, that'd be it for me until they were gone. Understand everyone is different, we all have lines we won't cross.

But any Man City fans that aren't ashamed at this point deserve everything coming to them.

It may well be they are ashamed (as I am in Ashton) but, as football fans, that doesn't mean we won't support our respective Clubs.

I hear you on the 'lines we won't cross' point though Dan, absolutely 100% agree.

The theatre and playground name-calling is, as usual, going to be near irrelevant, except it will fire up the home crowd for what they would usually regard as a mundane game.

Judging by the City fans reaction on Sunday, they’re not doing that… they’re supporting their club owner and not showing any embarrassment/ remorse.

Yes. Do you reckon German fans would put up with this sort of thing? I don't see them bringing banners about how much they love their owners after they've been caught cheating.

It's really weird to me that people act like football fans have no agency and that you must always support your team regardless of the wider picture. We certainly have agency when the club has bad owners... but apparently immoral ones are just fine as long as the team does well?

If tomorrow it was announced that Putin was our new owner, I would not support Ipswich until he was gone and I'd protest about it.

It's deserved, and fair game, at the very least it's good bants.

My only concern is that it might create a siege mentality for their crowd and players, give them that extra motivation, which is the opposite of the demoralising effect that might give us an edge. City are strong enough without us giving them that.

The siege mentality is already in place.

The City players know that there is a good chance that their domestic honours will be stripped from them so they are simply living in the moment which is playing out of their skins.

Their fans are both in denial and angry.

It’s quite a sad situation.

I do have sympathy with Man City and chanting ‘cheats’ or whatever at them won’t achieve anything.

My personal view is that I always feel that our best away support is when we sing and chant for our own team and players. Those days (most of the away days) are almost non-stop vocal support for us and don't fire up the home ends in any way. You just notice them watching and probably thinking that they wish that they were being as loud.

The shit ground, football in a library, panto stuff is fine and I join it to keep the volume high but I would always sooner it be our own songs. Think any cheat chants while understandable won't provide a positive lift to our players but could to their players and fans. It definitely didn't work on Sunday.

I have some sympathy with Man City, club and fans, the PL is set up so the biggest spenders win the title 99% of the time, I remember a time when Arsenal and Man Utd shared the title between themselves, in fact between 1992 and 2012 there were 4 winners of the PL. Two of those were Blackburn and Chelsea, Blackburn a one off push of funding by Jack Walker and Chelsea by massive funding from Abramovich. Then in 2012 Man City won the title due to their massive spending. This is all about protecting the cozy cartel the run the PL, they fear that an Ipswich, Hull, Newcastle or Everton get new owners with very deep pockets and prepared to spend big, the cartel will be broken up even further.
I believe this is not entirely about City, it is about preventing any other clubs getting their hands on any Champions League money.

Chelsea fans loved Abramovich because his dubiously acquired billions bought them trophies. Football fans usually like their owners while the team is successful & turn on them after a lengthy period of decline, which is usually put down to mismanagement or lack of investment. See Marcus Evans.

The PL is just a cartel designed to try and keep the traditional big clubs at the top.

No problem with mocking them for what's happened. We don't gain anything by being nice about it.

In any case, we and everybody in football have suffered from it. The big-spending rise of Man City has been one of the main drivers of the massive inflation in football over the last 15 or so years, which has torn apart relationships between fans and owners, sent clubs to the wall, loaded others with unsustainable debt, massively increased ticket prices and generally poured an enormous amount of money down the drain.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

As a Manchester City fan, I looked at your message board in advance of our game, and I was disappointed to see the views on here and wanted to comment. I hope this is OK.

The case rests largely on the Etihad sponsorship deal because that is where the material value of the case lies.

In 2019, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) official Arbitral Award ruled that,

"there is no doubt that Etihad fully complied with its payment obligation towards MCFC and that MCFC rendered the contractually agreed services to Etihad".

That, I believe was based on financial transaction records from the banking system. You may not be aware but according to a recent statement by Etihad Airways, the PL did not, in 2 years, call on evidence from Etihad Airways, who are the largest single UAE based sponsor of Manchester City.

The BBC can talk about Guilty verdicts, but an independent Court ruled on the basis of financial evidence in favour of City and Etihad Airways so be sceptical. There is then a Guilty and a Not Guilty verdict. When City talk about irrefutable evidence, I think they are referring to the financial records that were reviewed by CAS but I do not know for certain, but what else could be irrefutable.

I try to post comments like this on BBC Football, but they just delete my comments. I hope that you will read this and think that perhaps there is another side to the argument.

Good Luck this season. Manchester City are just finishing the construction of a new fanzone around on the opposite side to your end and you will be welcome. You can find lots of video of the ground on Youtube by searching for Etihad Stadium Construction.

I've not the time to go through everything, however:

You've put a lot on the CAS panel and it feels like you've tried to elevate it above recent findings of the independent commission. They are both 3 person panels staffed by legal professionals. They are equivalent bodies doing equivalent work.

You've also taken one line out of the judgement. Some other feedback was:
- The panel said City had shown a “disregard” for the principle that clubs must cooperate with a governing body’s investigations, and conducted an “obstruction of the investigations”
- and as UEFA Stated, many of the alleged breaches were time-barred due to the five‑year time period foreseen in the Uefa regulations.
- City were still found guilty of obstructing and fined. A lot of the 115 charges are for being similarly obstructive.

Also as an aside, City love saying "irrefutable evidence" like a mantra, but the evidence has just been refuted by legal experts after months of deliberation.
