1978 FA Cup Semi-Final, Full Match 20:49 - Oct 26 with 1259 viewsswede

I think this is the first time I have watched the full match since that glorious day back in April 1978.
I clearly remember the tension of that last ten minutes until Warky scored the third and we knew we were bound for Wembley. What I had forgotten was how much we were under WBA pressure for so much of the match....and oh, that last moment shocking miss by Robin Turner.

We were at Highbury for this with my brothers friend who died a short while later.
The match will always remind me of him.

thats really interesting. It's amazing how direct the game was and how much time the ball was in the air. No real concept of possession based football. You can see why the national team struggled so much as at international level we would give the ball away so much around that era.

You could say it was more exciting due to the number of crosses into the box and end to end play.

Think id still rather watch modern day footie though on good pitches.

Some frantic stuff in there, no time for any finesse! The only time it was played out from the back was Cooper rolling it to Beattie so he could pass it back again! Tactical injury break by Mills near the end! Clive Thomas having no opportunities for self promotion this time, he kept that on ice until the forthcoming World Cup!

Thank you to the OP. I’ve never seen the full game since standing behind the goal that day. And what a day and moment when Wark ended it. It was mayhem.

The criticism of no possession based football is a little unfair. There wasn’t a huge amount of it by us that day for a number of reasons. The pitches by that time of year were dead. Our midfield was light without Talbot for much of it and while Osborne did what he did, he was no Viljoen in his prime. It was very much a patched up team - no Whymark or Geddes and Hunter, Beattie both playing through injuries.

Then there was the nature of the game. FA Cup SFs were beyond tense because what was on offer was the biggest prize in domestic football. It’s hard to understand now just how important it was.

Different era.

Back to the game, Mariner was imperious. He had to be. Woods was excellent too as was the whole defence. Disciplined and strong up against a very powerful side.

The John Wile footage is remarkable. In those days: magic sponge. Or blooded magic sponge. Sorted. No? Get the first aid bandage out. Sorted. First clearance by us straight on top of his head. Squelch. Red bandage, blood everywhere. Problem? Nah. Get the spare bandage and off we go. And the blood was literally everywhere. Talbot didn’t know what day of the week it was. Carry on? He would have done if asked. He’d have needed pointing in the right direction though. Concussion? That’s for softies.

In terms of the game I didn’t breathe for most of the game. Nobody. When Martin was sent off for a dopey challenge, you could feel Albion waning and it was then I thought we’d do it.

What a day.

RIP Paul Mariner, Cyrille Regis, Kevin Beattie and Laurie Cunningham - and all those there that day who are no longer with us.

They gave out a voucher for those who were at Highbury that day.
When it came to the final tickets you needed two other vouchers issued at random during the season plus a semifinal one.
I joined the queue at 4am outside the doors to the Churchmans building. It went down Portman Road, around the back of the North Stand. Around the practise pitch and up to the offices. I played crib on the floor with others around me.
I did not know then that many had joined the queue without the required semifinal vouchers. I had 5 of them but not enough of the other ones. Horse trading in the line got me enough and helped others.
But as I eventually approached the offices at about 11 the rumour spreading was that they were running out. When I got there I saw a low pile of tickets on the counter.
The bloke in front of me suddenly produced enough vouchers for 15 tickets. I was so wound up I could have done him grievous harm on the spot.
Happily it was not the last pile.

They did indeed. We were lucky and had enough vouchers and no more, if I remember rightly my dad went to Portman Rd and got the tickets. I certainly didn’t.

Two standing in the upper gallery behind the goal. I’ve still got mine somewhere. I think it was the exorbitant price of £2.50.

I was lucky to get a ticket because my the father of my uni mate (& captain of our football team) was vice-chairman of Plymouth Argyle.

Went to every cup game that year with my dad including the final apart from the semi final. My sister was in a horse event in Manchester to qualify for the horse of the year show at Wembley so we had to all go to Manchester for the competition.
Bobby Charlton's daughters were also competing. They would have been same age as my sister at around 15 as it was Pony Club Prince Philip Cup. He was there and heard the radio I was secretly listening to and came over and asked what score was. He chatted to me and my dad about footall for the last 20 minutes of the match.
I have never seen it. Just memory of listening to it with Bobby Charlton and my dad who died soon afterwards.
I'm going to poor a good Whisky and watch it now and remember those days. Cheers.
