My personal opinion is that he shouldn't have to, the effort he put in to get into position. If someone hadn't been coming in I think he'd have had every right to be upset.

However

Does that count as "playing the percentages" or is it simply telepathic teamwork?

Modric is class. Utter class. He's purposely put the ball into an area that he felt had the best chance for a goal to happen. He's one of the best midfielders that's played the game.
