Best manager since Sir Bob on 04:10 - Mar 17 with 3062 views | peterleeblue | For one glorious season absolutely. Handing over to Mick McGiven was hardly inspired. For me though the 5 years of Burley to the finishing 5th season had everything for me.

Best manager since Sir Bob on 06:53 - Mar 17 with 2998 views | PJH | Thought when OP was edited it would include the correcting of the spelling of Lyall. R.I.P. to John Lyall,a very good Manager and seemingly a very nice man.

I initially thought it was wrong to praise Lyle without Tait. [Post edited 17 Mar 2018 9:51]

Best manager since Sir Bob on 09:53 - Mar 17 with 2729 views | chicoazul | Lyall is my all time fave Ipswich manager but that's due to my age I think. Really it's a toss up between Royle and Burley, Probably go for Burley on the basis he actually got promotion. I wouldnt be surprised if history looks very kindly on MMc's reign though especially if we continue with the same budget for the next manager.

Tait was a great bowler for Sussex and England. Had a very sweet in-swinger. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I guess I've forgiven him for the relegation season. He made a couple of mediocre signings, we had our eyes taken from survival by European ventures. Towards the end of the season it looked like we might survive. It was looking quite positive until a home game where we were tonked by Liverpool. The gains we had made quickly evaporated after that. It was always going to be tough to stay up. Too much reliance put on promised ITV money as a backup failed and the fire sale ensued. I know the majority wanted him out, I thought he should have had another season perhaps. Ps don't forget Big Joe, he worked wonders too.
Best manager since Sir Bob on 12:35 - Mar 17 with 2547 views | Lightningboy | Easily George Burley. The years between 95-2002 were at times heartbreaking but i’d go back to those days under him in a shot.

I think “unforgivable” is overstating things somewhat. I forgive him. He and his sides brought me so many hours of watching excellent football. Even when we played badly and lost we *tried* to play excellent football. With those - what 6 years of credit in the bank - he’s well in credit as an itfc manager. Lyall on the other hand had one mediocre season in Division Two, one wonderful one. And did he still manage the side into the Premier League for one season - or had he stepped back by then?

Think he had one season in the Premier League. And Burley by miles really isn't it?

Yes, definitely Burley with honourable mentions for Royle and McCarthy (maybe even Magilton too).
