Never normally have I, literally, never heard of an "influential" musician.
Not unsurprising, he was revered on the basis of cassette tape recordings, wasn't a particularly good guitarist or pianist, no production values, wasn't a great singer - but somehow some of his songs capture human vulnerability and fragility in a way few artists can do. More of an influential song-writer than an influential musician, really, if this is a meaningful distinction.

Think it's fair to say the majority of folk first heard of him via Kurt Cobain wearing his merch. There's a great documentary about Johnston, charting his mental illness + strained relationship with his parents. The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005). Worth checking out.
