I thought it was bonkers, but there is an argument that it showed faith in Lambert and removed any possible excuse for under performance. Lambert was certainly starting to look left and right for excuses at the time.
If ME is willing to pull the trigger now and take the hit then the decision itself is not a problem to anyone other than ME (and his bank manager). It only becomes a duff call if Lambert now survives because the expense of getting rid it too great.
