The EU need a safeguard “as regulatory differences diverge over time”. There’s a disturbing picture of slipping standards when it comes to the environment, ethical business, health and safety, and workers’ rights. And this is where the ERG (and the forces behind a hard Brexit) really get moist. I can see the government’s PPE model getting extended to the rest of the economy in a bizarre Ponzi scheme with the country split into winners and losers, when overall the country will inevitably lose. I don’t believe for a minute that “diverging regulatory differences” are in any way a good thing for us when regulations are generally tightening to protect society and sustainable growth.
