BBC investigation into probable Uighur forced labour on 23:24 - Dec 14 with 756 views | jeera | All we can do in the West, and what we should be doing, is to question more publicly where our goods come from and how they are sourced. This is out of the 1700s. Edit: I hadn't seen this bit; "The BBC asked 30 major international brands if they intend to continue sourcing products from China as a result of our findings. Of those that replied, only four — Marks & Spencer, Next, Burberry and Tesco — said they had a strict policy of demanding that items sourced from anywhere in China do not use raw cotton from Xinjiang." Only four confirmed any real concern then. [Post edited 14 Dec 2020 23:43]

BBC investigation into probable Uighur forced labour on 10:54 - Dec 15 with 646 views | monytowbray | It’s okay the market and the billionaires are here to save us by lobbying the US government to continue to allow them to profit from a Nazi-scale genocide. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/11/20/apple-uighur/ Wait. What? Almost as if this stuff happens when good people do nothing and turn a blind eye. The sooner we accept we all have blood on our hands and say “never again” (and mean it this time) the better. Granted many don’t know the source of what they purchase but we should have been asking how on earth goods got so cheap in first place. Demand was only going to bring us where we are now. Honestly I’d break up all the big tech companies at this point. They all suck. [Post edited 15 Dec 2020 10:55]

Buy local/indie and reject disaster capitalism as much as possible. Pressure your local MP and/or big government to fight back. Publicly slate/boycott companies profiting off genocide. A few steps in the right direction there. The issue isn’t exclusive to cotton, China will become the biggest economy in the world, overtaking the USA, in the next 5 years. Slave labour and genocide is assisting the CCP in that. But then the USA wasn’t built on rainbows and unicorns either. Really, humanity and personal accountability is the answer, the only word the world understands these days is “profit”, and if we keep buying, they assume we’re fine with it. I think most of us are guilty of buying stuff without giving it too much thought. If you are a regular customer of such & such then it cannot hurt to stick an email into their customer services with such a question. I was pleased to read the likes of Tesco and M&S have at least some sort of stance on this one, so it would be interesting to see what could happen if enough people were to hassle other large chains to squeeze some info. This is unlikely to happen of course, but shouldn't stop some of us trying. [Post edited 15 Dec 2020 12:26]
