I was going to say pitch didn't look too bad as it was nice and flat. But it, er, cut up a bit during the game didn't it. Not a blade of grass in sight. I remember bad pitches, but that's something else.

Cut up a bit?
Geoff Hurst looked like he'd blacked up after his headed goal.

Remember watching that on MOTD.
The great Jimmy Greaves got his usual debut for new club goal.
Now THAT was when football was really enjoyable to watch.
Indeed, although Jimmy was just that few years before my time.
I'm currently watching a documentary on Yoo Tube about Stanley Bowles. My nect door neighbour used to take me to QPR games now and again back in around 74. They had a great team then, marvellous to watch.
I didn't know it then but I believe I saw George Bests last game for Man U at Loftus Rd.

Derby County’s old Baseball Ground was fun in the mud back then too!
At around that time and through the 70,s, Derbys pitch at the old Baseball Ground resembled a beach by the time November arrived. Saw a few Town games played on it and they were decent.
We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub.

Yes QPR did have some very good players and teams in the mid 1970's, they finished 2nd in the top division in 1975/76 and only one point behind champions Liverpool.

From memory (not Google) QPR lost to Norwich on their last game - and I think Liverpool played Wolves a week later for their final game and scored a late winner to clinch the title.
I'm watching Stan Bowles thing on and off atm but he just mentioned Alan Hudson who was another great player. I wondered if he was still alive so I googled him.
Quite an unfortunate life by the look of it. From Wiki
Since his retirement, Hudson has suffered a series of setbacks. He had problems with alcoholism and was also declared bankrupt. In December 1997, Hudson suffered multiple injuries when run over by a car while walking along a London street. He spent two months in a coma and the doctors treating him were doubtful as to whether he would walk again. He has since undergone more than 70 surgical operations. He remains disabled, using crutches to walk and says "Every day now is a chore".[5] He separated from his wife after the collision, and moved back with his mother, but was ordered by the council to leave when she died of cancer in 2003.[6] He unsuccessfully invested £150,000 of his injury compensation in a property in Cyprus, and lived with his son until 2012 when he moved out because of his son's mental illness and the following year he moved into a hostel

Any chance you were there for the end of season game when Leeds Utd clinched the old Division 1 title? My Ipswich living mate back then was a Leeds die hard along with his younger brother and pals.I recall there was either 2 or 3 car loads of us that set out from Ipswich and all got into the sell-out/full house game and (cannot recall buying tickets in advance but maybe!) in with the QPR vocal end. 35,000 plus inside and huge pitch side party at the final whistle with Leeds champions!

No, I don't recall that one and by the sound of it I am sure I would have.

I was at Elland Road for their last home game in 1973/74 when they beat us 3-2. As I was very much into Leeds at that time and went to a lot of their games in London I headed for their ticket office after the Ipswich game in the hope of getting a ticket for Loftus Road but the queues were horrendous and I had to get back to the station for the special train back to Ipswich.

Apologies if this is slightly off the topic of muddy pitches and me asking Lucan if he remembered being at Loftus Rd for the QPR v Leeds title winning game 74 season as I was, but not remembering how a group of us from Ipswich managed to get in or tickets for the sell out game. PJH replied and said that Town were the last visitors that season and tickets were on sale after for the QPR game the following week and he attempted to pick up one as he was there for the game. I'm now wondering if one of the group I went with, was up at Elland Rd and managed to pick up all our tickets, around 10 of us!! 35,000 inside and I would guess almost half were supporting Leeds judging by the pitch invasion at the end celebrating the title win! Oh, and Towns game at Elland Rd was Paul Coopers debut! Thanks also Lucan for the link to Stan Bowles story
