Footballers want to be paid for the use of their personal stats 18:07 - Oct 12 with 1318 views | Bluedicea | Just wondering what people's opinions on this were. I think it's right they should maybe receive some compensation for certain statistics that are personal, like heart rates, speed, perspiration rates, medical related information. But surely as they play in the public eye, most stats like goals, assist pass, height, age, etc. are freely available for anyone to compile just from watching the games, so how could they enforce it if say a fan collected and sold that data, as it's nothing that is personal that can't just be observed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-58873132 [Post edited 12 Oct 2021 18:08]

At least one poster on here works, or worked, in football data so I'd be intrigued to hear his views. Could this also impact games like football manager?

Russell Slade seems to at least be the face of this and talks about the impact it would have financially at the lower end of the divisions and in the womens game which I think is a fair point Says there were over 7000 pieces of data for one player alone so would be interested to see what that all is. As above I think it depends on what that data is and how it is initially collected.

Footballers want to be paid for the use of their personal stats on 19:25 - Oct 12 with 1152 views | monytowbray | This could be the start of a long needed slippery slope for social media and big tech giants. There’s been discussion for years from tech activists that they profit off weaponising your own data against you in ways we don’t even fully know, so we should be able to opt out of ads and algorithm suggestions OR get paid to take part. So the principle makes sense to me RE original post. Every middle man gets their cut in other services. Hotel booking, food ordering, eBay selling. Why is a footballer (or you) any different sat between who provides the service and who pays for it? From a legal perspective there are personal brand and intellectual property issues within the current set up too that have largely been ignored until now. [Post edited 12 Oct 2021 19:27]

That's one reason I think it might be a good idea, as those that are at the bottom of the pyramid should benefit the most. My fear is for example this site. Would Phil have to start paying royalties to all the players statistics kept on here. Do you stop showing historical stats of ex club players because it's more expensive to keep such data. I haven't seen a proposal yet as to how they would achieve it. Sure some big companies make money off of it, but smaller fan based companies also use a lot or some of those stats.

Phil and Gav can correct if wrong, but much data is collected by 3rd party providers and API’ed to those who want/purchase it. I expect TWTD is similar and uses a provider. In that case it wouldn’t affect them, I expect the providers are liable to the cost. That or they are manually doing it themselves whilst mainlining Hobnobs but I doubt it, it’s a big job keeping those data points up to date. Dunno, capitalism is weird. That makes sense, I didn't actually think of that. I had pictured Phil had a little black book, hunched over scribbling furiously every match to get all the passes and goals. What you mentioned In your previous post about the internet and privacy. You should check up on Sir Tim Berners Lee, he's currently trying to stop the power hoarding by Google, FB, Amazon. By creating a system where the individual is in control of what data is shared to services, rather than letting the tech giants bamboozle people into agreeing to share everything they do on the web.
