Bury St Edmunds recycling centre now has automatic barriers for entry and exit. There are ANPR cameras in place but not yet working. This spells the end for the bloke at the entrance with an iPad.

I hope he's successfully redeployed, and not cast aside like a 19th century handloom weaver.

Why does it need barriers?

Especially on the exit.

I'd shift your allegiance to Sudbury if I were you, they still stick the traditional ways.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Booking only is staying clearly. The cameras will confirm you've booked.

I've been waved through by someone sitting in the hut with barely a glimpse.

They only stop the likes of you.

One time, at the height of the pandemic panic when people were signing their intentions through closed windows, the guy couldn't find my booking but waved me through regardless.

I think it's just for show for people who like that Sort Of Thing.

I would imagine the investment in the barriers will save the company who run it money.

That's what matters of course.

I reckon your wife probably phones ahead to tell them you're coming.

"Please stop us on the way in, he really likes it".

Maybe they do birthday bookings where people can put the barriers up and down as a treat. We could fund raise that.

Christ, I couldn't make a handloom, and I'm pretty decent at carpentry. Fancy being able to weave one!

(Actually, could you do me a favour and bung that 'joke' and most of my others in the non-recyclable bin when you're there. I really get on my own tits sometimes.)

Traditional as in you have to haul your junk up dodgy flight of stair while no one helps you.

I was at Uttoxeter a week or two back where they have a nice shiny new one like Bury's.

But the staff there actually help you when you pull up.

And politely point to things without looking like you're putting them out in some way.

I would recommend you visit Lavenham Guildhall on a Friday (or Thursday from half-term week onwards) when you can chat to, and learn all about spinning and weaving from the two ladies who demonstrate spinning there every week.

Spinsters, spinning a yarn, dyed in the wool, on tenterhooks; they'll explain it all to you.

And if you're surname is Walker, you'll find out what your ancestors used to do (they'd have been walking over freshly-dyed material in a vat of urine as part of the fulling process).
