Got to give Mark Ashton some credit 20:53 - Mar 30 with 1357 viewsSitfcB

He talks so passionately and enthusiastically about our club and genuinely seems to care and he’s only been in the job 9 months.

Seems sort of rejuvenated from his Bristol City days.

Exciting times for ITFC.

I expect he feeds off the enthusiasm of the fans, whose own morale has been boosted by the change of ownership and now the positive start to McKenna's time.

With the funding, the ambition and the generally upwards vibe, it must be quite an exciting "project" to be in at the start of, that of getting ITFC - eventually - into the Prem.

Yes, that all got a bit weird didn't it?

I can't imagine going out of my way to join another club's forum just to try to put down an ex-employee.

But I guess some of us are more invested emotionally than others.

It's very easy to when it's going well. BC fans gave him grief because things weren't going well and they ran up eye watering debts while things weren't going too well, so I can see why they were critical. The thing I don't think they give him credit for is the investment for the future - BC have transformed their ground into something that can be a platform for the next several decades.

Ashton's approach is a breath of fresh air for us though. We were in a far worse place under Evans with his austerity approach. That doesn't necessarily mean it's all going to be plain sailing, and I don't think we can really judge until we've seen the accounts under Gamechanger. But for now, it's going very well and a million miles better than under Evans. The more we see from Ashton and Evans, the worse Evans looks - he really was fkn awful.

Perhaps It could also be said that it’s far easier to be upbeat and passionate and in the front foot, when you know your ideas are bankrolled by the USA public service pension funds - a supposedly bottomless pit of money!

Things WILL get done at this Club and there is lots of money to make it all happen. But at some point on this journey there will be the expected payback time. The fans are ever present no matter what but Will Ashton be about then ?

But that payback is not going to come in the form of gutting the club and running away with all the proceeds, or leaving us mortgaged to the hilt. Given ITFC doesn't own the land at Portman Road, it simply can't.

Its more likely to mean them running the club as close to break-even as they can mange for now (which may mean selling to buy on the transfer front, but also maximising commercial and seat* revenue), then taking a slice once we do reach the Prem. That might leave us a bit under-funded for that division, but at least we'll be there. Plus instant relegation won't help their return on investment, so I doubt we'd be starved enough to imperil our status.

If they're thinking in terms of a ten- or fifteen-year timescale (it is a pension fund, after all), then that would give them some income and us a long period of success.

* Which can be by increasing numbers, rather than hiking prices.

It's just getting one over another team's fanbase isn't it?

I bet there's already been the odd town fan on a Huddersfield forum telling them how useful Marcus Evans is.

Dunno.

But I'm sure there would have been a few once on there thanking them for Marcus Stewart!

It's great to see that a lot of fans seem to be waking up to the potential we have here too. For too many years our fanbase have talked us down. As Ashton says, we are a special football club and we can be a real force if everyone sticks together and jumps on for the ride.
