I wonder how much of the abuse was just the ramblings of ill-informed individuals and how much was deliberate, organised disinformation initiated by vested interests.
I'm not sure which is preferable, and easiest to reverse?
On the one hand to inform the ill-informed you tend to have to break through ego issues, but outright fear might be good at doing that as things get worse.
On the other hand, the vested interests interests are only served by dis-informing up to the point when economies start to collapse. |  |

Unfortunately I think it's just people who have fallen hook, line and sinker for the outright lies told by the fossil fuel industry over the past few decades. There's probably a multitude of reasons why they won't change their mind despite the overwhelming evidence.
