Isn't it simply stupidity from the player handballing it? It is obvious that the assistant referee hasn't flagged and is checking. He should have simply dribbled the ball. Lazy/lack of concentration/stupid but entirely the player who picks it up in error.

Probably better explained in terms of Unconscious Competence and Instinctive pattern recognition.
Unconscious Competence is when you become so skilled at something that you ca do it almost without thinking. Every professional footballer has achieved this level of instinctive playing.
Pattern recognition is responding instinctively to a set of stimuli. In this case opposition player chases ball to sideline, stops ball and turns and jogs away. Even if you can see that the ball is on the line, every prior experience tells you that a player only does that when they have conceded the throw in and are rushing to get back into position before it is taken.
It's a worrying level of deception from the Red Bull player, and I wouldn't want them to be in a relationship with anybody who I cared about! Utter sociopath!

Minor flaw there, most players who concede a throw in, in a similar position always kicks the ball away instinctively.
