Hmm.. trains will be a nightmare, with absolutely no guarantee you'll get back afterwards. But. Shrewsbury is a good town for beers, historic, characterful, and some super pubs and bars.
Warning to anyone trying to avoid the train strike by travelling Friday - there is a London underground/ TFL rail strike, so crossing London will be a pain. There is the Stansted to Birmingham route, on tiny trains that tend to be very full and 'orrible... |  | | |

Agree about the town of Shrewsbury, well worth a visit in my opinion.
Although as the strike is an RMT one, Shrewsbury wasn't served by any services on the previous RMT strike days. | | | |
