Sequential numbers on my lucky dip 10:01 - Aug 19 with 2195 viewsBlueandTruesince82

4 out of the 5 main numbers, 2nd time that has happened in a month, what are the odds on that? Anyone?

Sooner we get to the end of the Camelot era the better

Sequential numbers have exactly the same chance of coming up as non-sequential numbers.

In fact it's better for you because it's unlikely any human would pick those sequential numbers so you won't have to share your winnings with anyone.

I know that in theory that is the case but in reality it's not going to happen is it? It's never happened.

But actually I was asking what the chances are of tbe lucky dip machine producing sequential numbers for me twice in a month?

I accept regardless of the numbers I have the chances of winning our 0.

I managed 4 numbers (most ever) a couple of weeks ago, I won £6.10.

Random number generators are never truly random but psuedo-random, as a computer cant do random. At best, the algorithm is seeded by a variable such as a time component or other variable but with many hundreds of thousands probably choosing lucky dips every week, you are going to see some repetition.

For most purposes this is correct, however you can take multiple samples over time and then calculate the entropy which should give a truly random seed for the process.

I have no idea whether the lottery lucky dip selection process uses such a system though.

I'd imagine they use a hardware number generator if anything, which would mean they aren't psuedo random.

EDIT: Looks like you can use a software based one as along as you can prove it's good enough

is that right? surely there are many more sets of 5 numbers which are non-sequential than there are which are sequential. using 1 to 99 there can only be 94 such sequential sets, where as there's a huge number of non-sequential sets?

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

From Camelot - "The Lucky Dip facility uses software that has been designed to generate numbers at random. The software is tested to ensure it does just that. "

So sounds like they are using software. I doubt it's a highly sophisticated algorithm. Probably the most basic possible to satisfy GC requirements.

I'm a bit of a maths nerd and I think I've worked out how to give you an answer but it depends on how many draws you've entered. When you say "a month", do you mean, say, 4 draws? 5?

I tend ro play euromillions once a week. So I'd say 4. Now today (because I was just rolling my £6.10 mega win) I have purchased 2 lines but normally just the one.

Let's says its 6 weeks between the 2 incidences which is tbe max it's been bur I think it's twice in a month.

OK slight spanner in the works as I'd assumed it was lotto (choose 6 from 49? Not even sure I was right with that as haven't played in years). What is the format for the numbers? I can adjust my calcs based on that.

You pick 5 nos between 1 and 50 and 2 lucky stars between 1 and 12

Match all 7 and you win big, for this the lucky starts are not a factor though as its just the 5 main nos where this can happen. In both cases 4 of the 5 nos were sequential.

The best way to reduce your odds (and increase your wins) is a wheeling system. You basically add an extra number into your selection so for the UK lotto (where you pick 6 numbers), you can choose 7 numbers (see example below). It requires playing multiple lines to cover all the permutations but the good thing about it is you will likely win multiple times if you get matching numbers.
Say you match 3 balls (1,2 and 3) you will win on Lines 1, 4, 5 and 6 in this example.

if you were to win the jackpot (match all 6). You will get the jackpot payment for line 1 and match 5 on all the other lines (and Camelot will hate you!)

1) 1,2,3,4,5,6
2) 1,3,4,5,6,7
3) 1,2,4,5,6,7
4) 1,2,3,5,6,7
5) 1,2,3,4,6,7
6) 1,2,3,4,5,7
7) 2,3,4,5,6,7

Whilst you can improve your odds of winning prizes doing that it's important to point out that you don't improve your odds of winning the jackpot.

You don't really improve your odds as such, as the expected value of your winnings will be the same, it's just if you catch enough numbers on one combination then your odds of having multiple winning combinations go up. If you miss, then you are more likely to miss on your others too. Sort of like the opposite of hedging your bets really (putting your eggs in fewer baskets??).

Right, assuming I've done it correctly, I make the odds that you would randomly get 4 of the 5 main number selections as a straight sequence, 2 (and only 2) draws out of 6, is 1 in roughly 67 thousand. So yes pretty unexpected! If you want to see my workings, let me know (as I said, I am a nerd!!)

I think you do (albeit slightly), as you now have a selection of seven numbers covered rather than the normal 6

So the winning numbers could be any combination of 1,2,3,4,5,6 or 7 and you've got it covered.

I think SB meant in comparison to any other random set of the same number of combinations.

Indeed but it's no different to picking any other 7 sets of numbers with regards to winning the jackpot.

You can't compare a single entry versus seven entries, only seven entries vs seven entries and there is no difference there with regards to the big money.
