Interesting take on Dele Alli’s career 12:01 - Aug 30 with 1644 viewsIllinoisblue

Good reminder that players are human and not everything in life and careers is easy or simple.

(Good read even if the ending is weirdly abrupt)

I'm not sure about the reference to Council Estates is that relevant, as that's not exactly a rare story for a footballers back ground.

I do however accept that issues of an absent father and chaotic childhood could impact on his behaviour and adult life.

This quote is an odd one;

"What if Alli has decided that the life-changing, ligament-bending sacrifices required to train and play for 15 years at the very highest level aren’t what he wants out of life? What if he just wants to play, earn, live? Why should we judge that choice any more harshly or sadly than that of the ruthless conqueror who craves only triumph and acquisition?"

The problem with this is that he is contracted to play at the very highest level. If he doesnt want that, thats fair enough... but if thats the case dont sign up to it.

Whatever happens, I hope he gets back on track and finds some fulfilment.

Agree, seems quite an odd take.

I just want to work, earn and live. Can I start spending half of my work time on TWTD?

Hang on...

Truly impaired.

Liew is a great writer, and it's good to read something intelligent on something so fun and frivolous as sport.

However, I have to disagree with the headline. Dele's career may well not be squandered and he's certainly no failure, but it's very difficult to argue that his career hasn't stalled. It's plain to see that he has stalled. No British footballer without a Turkish background goes to play in Turkey if he's still on the up...

It's not an individual's fault if someone wants to pay them for something they don't ultimately want to deliver to the highest possible standard.

Examples are everywhere

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

It is their duty to fulfil that contract to the very best of their ability.

He'd be the equivalent of that lazy bloke at work that has the ability but just does enough to get by.

You can manage that in most jobs but when you've got people paying to watch you perform you'll find the job opportunities drying up if you can't/won't put a shift in.

It's a real sh!t or bust move for his career but that's really up to him. He's already earned far more than any of us will in our lifetime so maybe it's enough for him.

Indeed, the sacrifices & commitment required to carve out any sort of a career as a professional footballer are huge & unsurprisingly, many professional sportsmen come from tough backgrounds. Dele Ali has reached a level where clubs are prepared to pay him £2-3m a year & plenty of players take their foot off the gas a little when guaranteed that kind of income. Others have an even stronger desire to keep improving & try to win trophies. We're all different.
