Mike Davis, California’s ‘prophet of doom’, on activism in a dying world: ‘Despair is useless’
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/aug/30/mike-davis-california-writer-int

'What do you think Americans should be doing right now?'

'Organize as massively as possible: nonviolent civil disobedience. Instead of just fighting over environmental legislation in Congress, ending up in a bill that’s as much a subsidy to the auto industry and to fossil fuel as anything else...'

I wish him a peaceful or a glorious death, whichever he chooses at the time.

America is too broken for Civil Disobedience, half the nation think Freedom and anti-establishment is stanning for authoritarianism, Jesus and a poverty stricken police state with guns.

Unrelated note, watched some of the new I Am a Killer episodes lastnight and it really is mad how much crime and death that would go away if they revised 2A. The guns are problem, if they were the solution there wouldn’t be all the crime and death involving guns. FFS.

Yup, I think they're too far gone too. Was actually having exactly the same conversation with my neighbour this morning. I think a lot of European countries could manage a socially- and environmentally-responsible popular soft revolution. The yanks; no chance. And us, somewhere in between, but with our chances fading rapidly.

I think the UK is in the same boat as the US on this.

The US constitution and certain amendments (not to mention the regional and state angles) provide a weird framing that can seem to be quite extreme. But that’s a side show because in reality it’s the political industry/bubble that has increasingly been disconnected from basic concepts of democracy, democratic representation and being genuine public servants.

That disconnect and democratic deficit is just as acute in the UK. And arguably even more so in our very static and centralised politics. We just don’t do “socially and environmentally responsible” nowadays. So revolution definitely seems the right term but it won’t be a soft revolution because it’s becoming increasingly clear that social and environment progress will be in spite of our politicians and their interests rather than with them. At least at first, until it’s clear which way the wind is blowing.

things will change only when there's a majority / consensus that they must change and that it's urgent. at the moment, alas, that's still a minority view. even more so in the us than over here. so everything currently must be about persuasion and broader consensus building. does civil disobedience achieve that? i'm sure some does, but it needs to be pretty selective and where the clear message outweighs the negative impact.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
