Nice to see our crowd hostile for once 10:18 - Oct 2 with 2148 viewsSouperJim

We've been a soft touch for years.

Not particularly condoning the ball lobbing antics but until refs start doing their job properly fans are going to get wound up. Pompey, like many sides, came to manage the game, slow it down and waste time from the first minute and the officials did nothing. The irony of Cowley going bananas towards the end was hilarious.

I thought there was a 'unsportsmanlike behaviour' rule....

So surely when they walk off the pitch from a sub at a snails pace they should get carded for that?

Or the ref could use the existing rules and insist they leave the pitch at the nearest point, instead of crawling across to the benches. Notable that when they were chasing the game their final sub did just that, and took dogs abuse as he walked round.

There is a clause where subs will only be made by the dug-outs if it’s a particularly hostile home crowd.

But the fact their player all of a sudden sprinted off in front of the North Stand when they were behind says everything.

I've never seen a sub leave the pitch as fast as their last one yesterday.

Yep I particularly enjoyed that, suddenly they weren't so keen to waste time

I'm all for a hostile crowd giving us an edge but just like our manager I was glad to see the ball back in play .

It annoyed me yesterday when a Pompey player was subbed he was on the opposite side of the pitch, but the ref allowed him to walk slowly across to the pitch and did nothing. But when Connor Chaplin was subbed the ref ran over and put his hand on his back to speed him up. Mr Breakspear seemed determined to help Portsmouth as much as possible.

Why? It doesn’t hurt us. If there’s 6 minutes left, 6 minutes will be played regardless of how long the fans keep the ball.

It actually helped us frustrate Portsmouth and slow any momentum.

It could hurt us. The other way of looking at it is that we weren’t under pressure when the crowd were keeping the ball. So better to let them have it then than during an increased stoppage time when we’re more likely to be under pressure, due to the typical psychological shift that tends to happen the closer you get to the end. The team defending a narrow lead tends to drop deeper whilst the opposition throws the kitchen sink. Hence why the crowd roars when a higher than usual amount of injury time’s announced and people say “why didn’t we do this earlier” when greater urgency is shown all of a sudden etc.

We’ve also got to go back to Fratton and I bet their player will remember that bloke mouthing off in his face on the touchline and they’ll talk about it. Difficult place to go, don’t need to give them extra motivation.
