Now suggesting road will re-open between 1.15pm to 1.30pm If still closed Exit left and cut across to A140. Needham Market will be a nightmare.

We lost an hour Sitters coming through Needham, luckily left early enough but only managed to get one pint in before the game ffs :) Why the hell does it take so long to re-open a road after an accident? About 7 hours in the end... | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Why the hell does it take so long to re-open a road after an accident? About 7 hours in the end... It's standard practice for police to thoroughly investigate any accident where a fatality may have occurred or where injuries are so severe that may be life threatening or life changing. There may have also been damage to the road or crash barrier. Either way, someone was having the worst day of their life. However, I can see the massive inconvenience in being late for a football match. Hope you enjoyed your pint.

There is often a need to carry out emergency repairs before a road can re-open. Seems this accident happened at the worst possible location with no really suitable alternative route available. Even at quiet times of the day, or night ,being diverted through Needham Market can be a pain.

Appreciate it’s too late now but before I set off from Cambridge for the game yesterday I checked this thread, then I checked Google maps and sure enough the diversion through Needham looked jammed. Instead I went north through Stowupland and across to join the A140 then back down to the A14. Probably added about 10 mins in total. Moral of the story - if possible, ignore the official diversion and make up your own one. Edit: actually noticed you posted this route as an alternative yesterday anyway! Although after I had left so I can still claim it for myself [Post edited 2 Oct 2022 11:43]

I took the same diversion as Sarge through Stowupland to A140. Added about 20 mins. Getting to parking space near Valley Road took ages though. Big crowds = loads of traffic.

Before I set off I read this thread and checked Twitter and FB where it was being said that there were no injuries and the road would be back open before 10am, this was about 9am ish, we left about 11.30am and was surprised it was still closed off even at that point.. Fair enough though, for investigation/work on barriers etc I'd understand that..

I think there were other accidents in the same area of the A14 in both carriageways as the morning went on. We ended up getting in to town quite early so as not to miss the game . Was a great atmosphere and game which made it all worthwhile. (Thanks for asking by the way, am doing ok ish. )
