Interesting Truss rumours 14:14 - Oct 13 with 1330 viewsZx1988

There's a fair bit of noise on Twitter at the moment that, apparently, the 1922 Committee now has sufficient letters to trigger a vote of confidence in Truss' leadership, and she is only currently safe by virtue of being within her first year as leader.

Other rumours are suggesting that there are now Tory MPs who would vote with the opposition if a motion of No Confidence was tabled in the House, as they'd rather take their chances with a General Election as opposed to whatever sh1tstorm Truss' premiership is likely to unleash.

Why anyone on twitter thinks they know the number of letters gone in, given the only person who does is Graham Brady, is beyond me.

There's lots of good stuff on twitter. But much like a football message board, there's a chunk of ITKs who just like to give the impression they know stuff, when they clearly don't.

Where does the rumour of she's safe for a year come from, as I'm sure that year rule only applies should she win a vote of confidence.

There are two different pathways. If a Government loses a vote on a substantive measure in the Commons then it automatically triggers a Vote of Confidence.

If the Government loses that then the Prime Minister has to resign and it would be up to the King to decide (having taken counsel from senior Parliamentarians) whether there was somebody who would be able to command the Confidence of a majority of MPs. If so they are invited to become PM by the King. If not, a General Election is triggered.

The other route is if sufficient letters go to the 1922 Committee, then the Tory Party has a leadership election. But under present rules this can't be triggered within the first year following a leadership election.

A hybrid of the two would be if Sir Graham Brady were to tell Truss that she no longer commands the support of sufficient MPs for a majority in the Commons and invites/encourages/cajoled her to step down for the good of the Party/nation, or disaffected Tory MPs will vote against her and trigger a Confidence vote.

The third is the most likely option.

A vote of no confidence so soon after a leadership contest would be hilarious if it wasn't true.

It makes the Conservatives look even more ridiculous than usual if that happens, and they will lose any shred of reputation they have remaining.

Surely it's got to be a General Election so we can banish the whole sorry episode to the history books.
