Immigration 14:07 - Nov 24 with 861 views | Crawfordsboot | So we had 1.1 million immigrants last year but only 70,000 or so asylum seekers including those crossing the channel illegally. Strange isn’t it that so much fuss and rabble rousing focuses on the illegals. All in the context of a population approaching 70 million. Could it be that the Govt are desperate to divert public attention from the disaster that is their mismanagement at every turn. Edit: approx. 40,000 crossed the channel last year and an estimated 90% of those are genuine refugee cases. [Post edited 24 Nov 2022 14:22]

Whilst I am sensing some recognition that we need migration (even from some in the govt) there is very much a narrative that we want well educated highly skilled workers, manual workers far less so. Which seems to me to do little to address the labour shortages in agriculture, hospitality and care work. I think people in the SEast are understanding the issues, you only need to walk past a pub, care home or cafe to see a "staff wanted" sign. I don't spend enough time in other areas of the UK to know if these labour shortages are replicated elsewhere too.

Immigration on 14:47 - Nov 24 with 734 views | Pinewoodblue | Almost half are educational. The biggest rise is in resettlement, 130,000 from Ukraine, 21,000 from Afghanistan and 70,000 from Hong Kong. Plus of course those who arrived by boat from France a little less than 40,000 as figures are for the year ending June 2022.

We should be building 500,000 quality council houses every year. Keeping the poor in crap housing and telling them to blame immigrants doesn't actually create a thriving economy. Who knew?
