Very well may be true but poor reporting nonetheless. When the eastern block joined the EU it was projected to take 50 years for them to reach the level of GDP per capita of the UK - so Brexit it appears, may have brought that forward more than a decade! People in the UK to be poorer than those in Hungary, Poland and Romania on 11:56 - Feb 27 with 1263 views | DJR | I heard on Radio 4 today that wages hadn't increased in real terms since 2008, so whilst Brexit hasn't helped, I think the real cause has been 13 years of the Tories, aided and abetted by that nice Mr Clegg.

Another thing I heard on the programme is that all of our growth in recent years, and all of our inward investment, is concentrated in London and the south east. So Brexit clearly hasn't helped some of those areas that voted for it, and it will take a herculean effort for any party to change the structural problems which affect the UK. But maybe a start would be the construction of major projects in the rest of the country, given that all such projects (the Olympics, new tube and rail lines etc) have been concentrated in or close to London. Well said. I’ve spent a lot of time in Germany and their federal system has resulted in a really balanced economy. Brexit was never going to result in better investment outside of London, I think it was a finger up at the establishment which has ignored them for decades - both blue and red. MediaCiry is one of the few successful examples of decentralisation, and brought good jobs to Manchester more projects like this are needed in addition to the infrastructure investment you correctly highlighted.

The present government is relying for growth on things like life sciences and financial services, but those industries are concentrated in the south east and dominated by the well-educated, so not really of benefit to many in the rest of the country. I am not sure whether Labour's plans are any different but as you suggest New Labour didn't change things structurally, and Robert Peston is not wholly convinced that Starmer's growth targets are achievable. However, from my point of view, it's the only game in town. [Post edited 27 Feb 2023 12:33]

People in the UK to be poorer than those in Hungary, Poland and Romania on 12:55 - Feb 27 with 1043 views | NthQldITFC | I suspect that the only predictions that can have reasonable accuracy at a 17 year horizon now are the low level climate ones. The higher level social, political and economic forecasting models have little hope of predicting where we are headed over anything more than a few years, in my totally unqualified opinion.
