The policies are suspect at the best, however, I am struggling to see how policing illegal boat crossings is racist. Smearing all concern about immigration as racist is counter productive in my view as it stifles legitimate debate on the issue and also hurts the fight against racism as it obscures genuine racism

Whenever I read stories of Sunak and his band of Merry Brexiters negotiating with the French I always think of the castle scene in Monty Python’s Holy Grail.

But it goes beyond policing illegal boat crossings because the actions breach humans rights laws and the Refugee convention.

In any event, the rhetoric surrounding it seem to me to stray into racist territory by use of the words "invasion" (by Braverman) and support (by Braverman and Anderson) for demonstrations by the far right outside hotels hosting asylum seekers.

The other thing to say is that last year, despite Brexit, there were 1.2 million migrants to the UK, and net migration into the UK was at its highest level ever, so if the concern is about the impact of immigration, ordinary immigration is a much bigger problem than the 45,000 people who crossed the channel in small boats. But the Tories don't want you to know this, and prefer to keep the debate focused on the small boats.

Nothing racist about the policy.

Feel free to comment about the legality, morality or enforceability of the plan, all of which are suspect, but there is no racism here.

I'm sure that it's pure coincidence that the refugees from ukraine that we've (rightly) bent over backwards to provide safe and legal routes for are overwhelmingly white whilst, the refugees coming over in small boats that the government are intent on demonising are mostly brown.
