It's baked into the national psyche and is a direct result of having a monarchy. We are conditioned from birth to defer to our 'betters'.
In France, on the other hand, their national ideal, Liberte, eqalite, fraternite are literally written in stone wherever you go. Even their graffiti references The Rights Of Man. They fight for their rights and are all better off as a result.
