I'm going to bang on about Palm oil again, blame Chris Packham... 19:43 - May 14 with 1121 viewsWeWereZombies

Just finished re-watching this five year old documentary, thought provoking as when I saw it when it first came out but this time it has me pondering on the inevitability of change and the likelihood that we will not get things arranged for the better. Still, there is some warmth in this story and I think it is worth an hour of anyone's time.

The human race breaks my heart anew every day.

There are good people and there are bad people, but as an entity we will cheat and thieve and deceive and manipulate for meaningless and transient 'wealth' and ego-w@nking and we will destroy ourselves, our children and the rest of nature to do it.

We will delude ourselves that technology and legislation and the next public inquiry will fix things but we will just keep on doing what we do until it all breaks down.

I'm sure many people will think this is wilfully and unnecessarily negative and gloomy but until we are brave enough to face what we are and where we are headed there's no hope of turning the corner. And there's always hope because we never know anything with absolute certainty. So we have to face and accept what we are and then try to see if we can actually, miracle of miracles, make a difference.

Rant over (and yes, I am pissed.)

Not sure that is gloomy enough.

It's all but over. Humanity is not capable of the sweeping changes we need to make in very quick time.

I think the only hope is some brilliant new tech. Not suggesting for a second we should just give up but there is virtually zero chance the world meets the target.

"Humanity is not capable of the sweeping changes we need to make in very quick time."

The thing is, we are, it's just that the threat has to be really obvious. COVID was a very good example of this as it was inescapable what was about to happen. Everything shut down almost the world over to deal with it.

The issue is that until the problem has become unavoidable, we're great at putting it off.

That makes issues like climate change and the destruction of habitats bad because once sh1t hits the fan, it's already too late.

Fair point, i'll rephrase to we're not capable unless absolutely forced.

Although even during covid we had massive pushback from political leaders (US, Brazil, Belarus etc) and idiots around the world.
