I Remember seeing that digital nomad scheme when it came out and stopping in my tracks a bit - pretty appealing on the face of it. What a mess, although I feel for people on 3000 a month being described as rich - they're just trying to live their life internationally. But then again, how does that first woman quoted make 700-ish on rent out of 900ish wages work? Fck me that must be some struggle.

In terms of cutting it back, I wonder how many of those digital nomads' employers and tax authorities know what they're doing. If they're UK employed, I'm pretty sure there are some complicated rules about how long they're out of the country for and how their income is treated. You can't just up sticks and WFH from another country.

Without giving it much thought I have no particular view on it other than chances are it is likely over paid compared to most useful jobs!

Depends on employment T&C My oldest male offspring is in a job where they claim he can WFH from anywhere in the world, he's considering spending 6 months with his cousins in Medellin, Colombia. I have reminded him of the time difference! Tax is, IIRC, easier, declare non-dom to get out of UK Tax system, declare status in the other country and pay tax there. *but it's a long time since I read up on this, so may not be true now.

My understanding is that if you are not resident for tax purposes in the UK, you will still pay UK income tax on employment income arising from a source in the UK. You may may still have to pay income tax in the country in which you are living, and you then get into the complications of double taxation. https://www.gov.uk/tax-uk-income-live-abroad In my view it would be wise to seek tax advice before upping sticks.
