Hladky growing in confidence and looking the part 11:41 - Aug 13 with 1111 viewsChrisd

After a shaky start at The Stadium of Light last Sunday, he grew in confidence as the game progressed. A clean sheet yesterday is only going to help him. Naturally, we were all concerned with the length of time of Christian Walton's injury, as he really is a crucial player for us but I'm also pleased the way Hladky has come in and started this season. Early days yes, but long may it continue.

What was particularly pleasing yesterday was that he didn't have that nervy start and looked to have got the nerves out of his system at the SoL last week. He looked very assured and made a decent stop at 1-0 in the first half with what was really their first opportunity of the game. Showed he was switched on as it took a bit of a deflection and he'd not had anything to do other than pass to his teammates at that stage. Made a confident punch second half as well to clear the danger. He's looking a very able deputy, let's hope he can keep it going.

Taking crosses is a real strength of Walton's but there was a couple of times last week where Hladky was really decisive with his decision making in dealing with crosses into the box, the punch where he laid out Donacien was extremely positive and impressive. I do feel the more he plays and plays well his confidence will continue to grow. Hladky just needs to concentrate on doing his job and not trying to make things happen, if he does that like you've said he'll prove a very reliable No.2. It will also help Walton as he'll know that he can't afford to be complacent as we have Hladky in the wings waiting to grab his chance. What's not to like?

I think his issues at the start of his first season here is basically that he had 11 team mates none of which really knew each other or the way they play. Then that was compounded by a few errors early on and we couldn't risk a gk low on confidence given we had a terrible start and needed to 'gel'

As mentioned above, Walton definitely catches the ball more but as long as the defence know exactly what to expect from their gk and that Hladky likes to punch we'll be fine.

We have to remember that last week was his first ever game in the championship infront of 40k and coming in after Walton and the teams great end to the season so he was bound to be a bit nervy.
I have no worries about him playing instead of Walton he's a good shot stopper and good with his feet and will only get better with more good results and confidence
