Earth ‘well outside safe operating space for humanity’, scientists find 21:30 - Sep 13 with 1161 views | NthQldITFC | https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/13/earth-well-outside-safe-oper Not that we didn't already know most of this stuff, but it pulls together the damage our stupid, suicidal species has been doing (and unbelievably is ramping up even now) to Spaceship Earth over the last couple of centuries or so. Would you send your children up in an aeroplane where the oxygen supply is faulty, the fuel is contaminated, the navigation system keeps rebooting itself, the wings have cracks, the windows have stress fractures, the landing gear is stuck half way down on one side, the pilot is pissed and there are NO parachutes? That's the planet we live on, and all many of us seem to be concerned about is what in-flight movie is on and whether we get free drinks or not.

You're quite right to state that this has been known for years and you don't have to build complex system dynamics models to show this. There is so much evidence of the damage we are doing to the biosphere and I am yet to hear a convincing argument to reverse this trend. Any ideas on how to reduce the impact on the biosphere without collapsing the system we rely on to live our lives? There are ideas that are very much in their infancy and most policymakers won't even engage with. It seems the pseudoscience that Sagan warned us about has taken hold in the areas where it matters, COP28 will certainly be interesting in December.

Even totally selfless and responsible policymakers within existing democratic governmental structures would be limited by the feedback from a generally self-interested , uneducated and Mr Magoo-level, short-sighted electorate. Without a majority acceptance and a genuine willingness to really and materially face up to the mind-blowing threats we face, democracy is more of an impediment than anything. The hope, perhaps, is with the terrified young who have been born into this situation and perhaps will put survival as a priority over indulgence. The communication tools at their disposal might allow very rapid mass action at a level difficult for the establishment to repress. The danger of poisonous misinformation or the removal of the means of communication might threaten that. Chris Packham's upcoming Channel 4 documentary "Is it time to break the law?" might at least spark a bit of debate.

We adapt the systems as they stand to continue using the methods that have sustainability and resilience, dump the damaging aspects of the existing systems, maybe take a step away from individuals and organisations who are not engaging with these methods. It is what successful species have always done - but that doesn't mean that all of that species will survive. Of course it is going to be ugly, very ugly. And I am not sure who are the likely individuals are who are in the surviving camp, including me...and, on the evidence you have presented, you.
