Govt response to the Bishop's report 08:17 - Dec 6 with 869 viewsbluelagos

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/dec/06/no-10-finally-to-respond-to-201

7 years on the govt will today publish their response to the report from the Bishop addressing the multiple failings in how the police led a cover up of their role in unlawfully killing 97 football fans.

He recommended a lot of things, central are reforms around public inquires and I inquests. Parity of arms is a phrase used but basically it means funding for legal teams for ordinary people as at present public bodies have a clear advantage (See Ofsted lawyered up at the Ruth Perry inquests)

And the Duty of Candour that needs to have some teeth and should apply to all public officials.

Expected to be announced midday...

Predictably lame response by the looks of it. No justice.

Seven years for that?

Another reason for Liverpool (justifiably) to hate the Tories.

I'm genuinely astonished and appalled that DoC isn't a legal requirement across public services. It's been that way in health for years.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Spoke to Elkan Abrahamson and Ian Byrne yesterday evening.

Elkan is the lawyer who wrote the Hillsborough Law, Ian the MP who is pushing the Hillsborough Law campaign inside and outside parliament.

Their response to the proposals was essentially that they do not in any way meet the changes asked for by the Bishop and campaigners. The funding of a public advocate seems to be the one area being addressed properly.

But the duty of candour, enforceable in law and applying to all public officials is very poorly addressed. The idea that the police chiefs self police their colleagues to ensure they are honest...yeah ok.

Some good news is that the Labour front bench and Scots Nats are fully on board with the need for a legally enforceable Duty of Candour. So is possible that a change of govt. could be a way forward.

As well as a Grenfell representative l heard from a lady from the campaign around infected blood. She lost her husband to HIV, is herself infected all from blood transfusion. She's been campaigning 35 for changes all the while the govt putting up barriers.

Shows that the campaign for a Hillsborough Law is actually about cover ups, state cover ups and legislating to try and stop them. Get behind it, ask your MP to support it.
