Resting Kane and Walker. 17:55 - Jun 24 with 1025 views | Mercian | I think it is worth the risk. Kane looks jaded and resting Walker because of his age is sensible. I would not risk Shaw either and have all three in the bench. Watkins looked lively when he came on. Pull Bellingham back to play as an 8, Foden as a 10 and Rice as a 6. Play Gordon at LW and Trent at RB in a 4-3-3 formation. [Post edited 24 Jun 2024 17:57]

In terms of personnel, with Gallagher in for TAA, it looks like decent XI on paper, and certainly good enough to beat Slovenia and anyone we're likely to face in the last 16. So I'm neither overly worried nor overly surprised by the team selection (if Gallagher for TAA is indeed the change). Buttt, if Southgate is making only one little change in personnel, he needs to make a hell of lot of changes to the way in which the team has been playing. He surely has to have put the proverbial rocket up them, show them the average positions that they adopted in the 15 mins after we scored against Denmark, and tell them that that is simply not the right approach. Those positions were laughable in the form of a diagram, but totally demonstrated exactly what we had all witnessed subjectively. We need to push on forward just as the BBC pundits said, and just as any of our players' domestic teams would do. I don't necessarily have confident that Southgate will have done that to the extent necessary, but I don't think that starting-XI selection is anywhere near being the biggest problem. I would also like to see Palmer and Gordon get some decent minutes if the situation allows. If we're 2-0 up after 60 minutes, especially if Denmark aren't winning, he's got to do it - hasn't he?!

If Southgate can make the likes of Trippier and Walker look poor, imagine how Leif might have suffered. He’s fantastic for us because KM’s a tactical genius and mega motivator. But with the best will in the world, h’s not at the same level as those two (yet!).
