Two of our friends are again presiding at a polling station tomorrow. They get

45p a mile to & from the polling station, including the trip to the counting venue in Newmarket
45 p a mile for a trip ahead of tomorrow to reconnoitre the site
£30 each for completing an online training course
A total of about £600 for the day. One gets more than £300 as presiding officer, the other a bit less.

Against that, it is something like a nineteen hour day: they have to get to the polling station for 6.00 am to set up for opening at 7.00 am, and after sorting everything out and travelling to Newmarket (in the opposite direction to their home) they won't get home until around midnight.

It'll be an even longer day, as they think the village they're in has a population of around 100 people of voting age.

My Dad used to be a poll clerk and then presiding officer and there was a hell of a lot of responsibility and driving to god forsaken places.
I also used to drive him when he did the national census, same applied there.

Easy money. On the other hand you need a good book for quiet periods and paperbacks aren’t cheap nowadays.

My son has been dog sitting recently for needy people who don’t want their pooch in a kennel. £600 a week seems to be what people pay for that too.

My dad did presiding officer for many elections, the last being 2014. He was assisted for a number of them by my sister. They absolutely loved doing it, despite it being a very long day. I never knew they got expenses for it.

Well done to the people that do this.

Know a couple who used to ‘man’ a polling station in a small village, less than a score of voters. Anyone who was going to vote had done so by mid morning. A long day but they enjoyed doing it.

I’ve no idea how much you get to choose which polling station you do or how it works tbh. I never asked. I suspect, because my dad had been a presiding officer right back to god knows when, he always got the busier ones. Despite living in Waldringfield, he used to do one in Felixstowe.
