Following on from the recent moans about insurance premiums, my own home insurance came up for renewal this week. I got my renewal quote from Admiral - £305.89, up from £188.58 twelve months ago, a 62.21% increase despite no claims and nothing else that would serve to up the premium by such a gargantuan amount.

Interestingly, if the premium had tracked RPI, it would have increased to £194.04 (2.90%) based upon the most recent twelve months' data.

Shopping around, I managed to get better cover through Hastings for £197.35 (incredibly similar to an RPI-based increase on last year's premium), but that's not the interesting thing.

I ran the same quote through the four big comparison websites, and through Hastings, and the results were all over the place:

Annoying Mongoose - £197.35
Roger Whittaker - £230.40
Hastings - £261.27
Judi Dench - £270.59
Fat Bloke - £323.78

How is it that the same cover can cost up to 64% more depending on where you get your quote from? Is it that the 'gifts' that you get for signing up through different comparison sites might cost more, depending on what they are? Or does Fat Bloke, for example, think that their customers are a little more flush than those who are drawn in by Annoying Mongoose?

Will be dependent on who is underwriting the insurance offered on each site and what the arrangement the comparison site has with them. Different underwriters will decide on a case-by-case basis which transactions they are willing to cover and what rates they need to charge to make a profit.

My own experience of insurance premiums is that the renewal premium is just the opening bid....

Don't think I've ever paid anywhere near a renewal price but it does pay to find your alternatives early in the negotiations and you have to be prepared to go through with the I quit threat!

Wild guess, do the owners of Blackburn own those comparison websites?
