Re-finding our identity 21:46 - Sep 29 with 1297 views | surreyblue | It's been clear in our first few games that we've installed a pragmatic element to our game - particularly with the draw against Brighton. FWIW, that is one of the key differences between McKenna and the likes of Russell Martin - both have the same philosophy to play out from the back and play good football but McKenna is inspired by it whereas Martin is beholden to it. While Delap's second goal was fantastic and will rightfully get a lot of praise, his first goal actually meant more to me because it was just the type of goal that we've seen so many times over the past couple of years - high press winning the ball upfield, neat play in midfield to free someone down the sides, and a low pull back followed by a first time shot into the back of the net. For all the positives out of the first five games it was clear that the usual patterns of play were still being worked on after two years of them being ingrained in the side (everyone knew what Morsy was about to do at the start of the move that resulted in that Sarmiento goal) but seeing that gives me more and more confidence that this team will carry on improving game after game. Everything about the approach to our games is what you see week in week out from established prem teams. We will get wins. But draws are fine as its ticking up some points add a win or two and we are midtable.

Today was our best performance of the season by a mile because we actually played the football that has been evident in both promotion seasons. That said, you have to acknowledge the massive step up in standards of defending and the sheer physicality and pace of the Prem. It’s difficult to do what we did in the Championship and League One because the defending is so much better. They read those little cutbacks which Chaplin used to score from regularly. But I thought we played really well today and it was very noticeable how we got Davis on the ball far more. What is also noticeable is, unlike Martin at Southampton, we’ve accepted there is a balance to playing out from the back or going longer and creating one on one opportunities. McKenna is so good at adapting and in my humble opinion we’re only going to get better.

Evidence that the coaches are working on how to be more incisive on the counter. I absolutely love watching how KMc is building individuals and building the team. It will be slow and steady, but the improvement is evident. [Post edited 29 Sep 2024 22:05]

Many factors at play that brought it together today: -Its a home match where we express ourselves vs away at Brighton/Ethihad -We're building momentum and understanding -Pragmatism as McKenna adapts to these impressive teams, hes talked of building from the back and staying in the game and creating chances. Such a clever manager this match was all about McKennas style and management, from the captain to the wingers, the striker the substitutes the one time shots the corners.
