Our Press...is part of the problem 21:41 - Oct 19 with 1178 viewsWicklowBlue

Aside from the debate on player positions, how we press the opposition when they have the ball is causing issues.

In the Championship we thrived from having a high press, winning the ball or second ball back keeping pressure on the other team.

In the Prem with more technical/physical players they can find the space a lot quicker than we are used to.

Delap chases everything down which is admirable but unless the whole side move up onto their opponent it's a waste of energy and there is an easy wide pass which we saw J Clarke struggling to get back for.

While I'm all for expansive entertaining football maybe we just compress the play a bit more when the oppo have the ball? Keep the lines with a deeper press, make it harder to play through us and get closer to their opponents when out of possession

Thoughts?

I think KM realised that Everton are a very direct team, as per West Ham, and was playing a cautious approach. No extreme high press, more long balls out from the keeper.

Unfortunately, Clarke missed a sitter and we had a penalty shout ruled out. We had lost at half time imo. Dyche played a solid tactical hand,.and we are just not clinical enough as a team right now.

Whilst you may not be wrong, the issue we are currently facing is mistakes are being punished.

At the moment, we are beating ourselves. We are gifting goals to the opposition - we need to cut that out and then we can think about how we approach games home vs away, how we press, how we utilise players etc.

Right now, those discussions are moot.

True there are too many individual mistakes agreed.

Also agree we are beating ourselves but some of it is from pressure being applied and not just clearing the ball.

Another element of it is from not competing for second balls and chasing all over the park. Hence my post.

I believe what you are saying was demonstrated in the game against Villa. The feeling going into the Villa game was that Villa are a good team, we are likely to lose, we may nick a draw, let’s keep it tight. We came away with a credible draw. Against West Ham and Everton we have been more in hope of picking up a first win, a belief we can beat these, we were not as tight and picked up nothing.

I think Villa struggled with out setup, whereas West Ham and Everton setup to stop it. Doubling up on Omari and pressing us high so no space to play out from the back and equally not able to pass into midfield and secure possession

Delaps press and hirsts press are two completely different skills

Delaps is busting a gut but a bit rabbit in a headlight. Hirst doesn't actually sprint much but smartly positions the defender where he wants him to go.

Today's lack of a front press was odd as unit tho as Everton struggle against one and we barely tried it.

a niche perspective

You either press as a team or not. Agree Frimmers, Delap going to chase down balls to the keeper leaves an easy pass elsewhere.

Perhaps we should think about just holding lines and making it harder to pass through us.
