As you say, the last few games. Obvious question is why not at earlier games this season and previous seasons?

My best guess is that the PL did an audit after a couple of matches, and made certain recommendations such as beefing up security, and putting those stupid bollards in place. Not that most of the scanners are particularly effective. It does seem like luck of the draw, for instance, whether bottled drinks get confiscated or not.

If so, what evidence do they have to show that they are necessary?

I suppose there are plenty of possible scenarios, and I highly doubt that the club have just done all of this on a whim. Perhaps they were asked by the PL how the previous setup would prevent contraband being brought into the stadium, or I suppose that it's not outside the realms of possibility that a PL 'secret shopper' was able to smuggle something into the stadium. Given that the goalposts now seem to have their own security at half time, perhaps they're particularly worried about locking-on equipment being brought in? On the other hand, it may well be that intelligence has surfaced about a potential risk to PL games in some shape or form. We'd never be told the details in a month of Sundays, but the increased security would be obvious. If I was intent on doing harm or making a point, I'd definitely be seeing provincial stadia as an easier target than somewhere like Arsenal or United. Similarly, if the measures do their job, we'll never get to see why they're necessary. [Post edited 8 Dec 2024 13:33]

lots of people are doing new risk assessments in anticipation of martyn's law. that would definitely explain the bollards. but anything that causes more crowding outside the ground would seem counterproductive.
