The importance of being clinical 16:35 - Dec 8 with 876 viewsGeoffSentence

For all their lengthy periods controlling the game, Bournemouth didn't create many good openings. Three decent ones that I can think of, they hit the post with one and scored the other two. That's what we need some of, the ability to put chances away when we get them. We did get a decent number of chances today but only stretched their keeper a couple of times beside the goal.

Really? They had more chances than we did.

Not many of them were decent chances though. A few long range ones straight in Muric's hands. Until that last few minutes I felt that we had comfortably, post chance aside, kept them at bay.

I don't think xG is perfect, and I don't have a particularly robust understanding of it. However, trying to be objective, it's the best measure we have. We had half the xG of Bournemouth and half the actual goals. So I'd say we were exactly as clinical. We scored 1 even though our xG was far less than 1. So I don't think that's the issue.

We're bottom of the league on xG. We need to create more, and better chances.

Clangers at the back don't help either, of course.

Flashscore has it down as 1 big chance for us vs 6 big chances for them.

Today epitomises the problem we face for me. We played pretty well for the most part yet they still had more big chances than us, xG of 2.99 vs our 1.33 and had twice as many corners as us.

I think this is the thing - we seem to have to work hard for every goal we score. Meanwhile, we just gift the oppostion their opportunities.

Neither Forest or Palace had to try that hard. They just waited for the mistake. Bournemouth pushed more as they were one down, and were presented opportunity after opportunity (O'Shea might be better off the ball that Woolfenden but he was horrible on it today - thank goodness for Burgess).

all plenty of signs that our squad isn't quite good enough at this level, especially the bench players.

6 big chances for them? where did they pluck the other three from?

Well for starters, they missed an open goal from about a foot out after 5 minutes.
