That sounds rather worrying although a quick search seems to indicate there is no evidence it's bat related. However I agree that it's sensible advice not to eat bats.

This article seems to indicate they think it's a respiratory form of Malaria which has unfortunately killed mainly children with underlying conditions such as malnutrition. Very sad but hopefully it's a contained outbreak.

There was also a discovery of a new Coronavirus found in bats at everyone's favourite lab in Wuhan last week:

It's derived from the virus that causes MERS and could be human transmitted but there is no evidence that has ever happened.

Respiratory Malaria, that's what it effects, not how it spreads?

Yes, you're correct, Malaria is a parasitic infection spread by mosquitoes.

To be honest, looking at the chart in the more detailed article it doesn't look like they really know exactly what it is at the moment but that malnutrition does play a part with regards to mortality.

Which kinda reinforces the argument against cutting the UK's overseas aid that's taken off today.

Hungry/starving people eating rancid food that they'd not have chosen to eat if decent other food were available -> potential for outbreak of virus that could spread worldwide quickly.
