The left back situation 20:14 - Mar 6 with 1724 viewsFrimleyBlue

I found this comment quite interesting

"there isn't very often a position higher up than Leif "

Forgetting individual players for a moment and forgetting how good Davis is as a chance creator ( not exactly sure how many are open play but I'd assume still pretty high)

But... when there's talk of style of play, promoted sides not adjusting for prem football etc.. is our use of our left back an issue compared to other clubs?

It just seems really naive to be a promoted club and actively have your left back being the highest position up the pitch..

Open question to all. Just intrigued to know from those who watch prem football in past seasons. Is it normal. Perhaps on their right rather than left. Or is it something we maybe needed to change a few months back.

a niche perspective

What you want is a player average position map - even better, maps for different possession situations and for each team in the league. My guess is this would reveal Leif to occupy 4th spot in our side, contrary to that person's observations.

Leif would be far more effective if we had Townsend behind him at LB doing the actual defending part of the game.

But who then do we sacrifice to make space for that?

Probably depends what the rest of the team is doing really. I think we all internalised the idea that the system we play is a 4-2-3-1 and therefore the Davis role is part of the defence and Burns role is part of the attack.

Reality is that both roles doing a lot of attacking and defending is important for the system as a whole, which also requires the three other defenders to defend the width of the pitch and the two centre midfielders to cover some of that space during counter-attacks.

I can see the case for us having four/five defenders who get compact and sit in shape, but just as we've sometimes lost games pressing high and leaving spaces, we've also lost games being defensively-minded (we broadly set-up that way in the first half against Man U and got punished for it).

Think the reality in this league is that you're probably picking between different likely losing strategies most of the time.

Yes. It’s an issue. Play Townsend, drop leif, have Philogene or broady ahead

That wouldn't work. Been tried many times by clubs and countries.

I think, out of all the players that we expected to be able to step up, Leif has been the most disappointing. Frequently caught out of position, fragile when defending, has led to a lot of goals conceded.

Burns and Chappers clearly aren't Premier League level but have at least had a go and been largely OK. We never seem to look defensively tight when Leif plays.

Sadly I have to agree, let's hope it's just a one season blip, he's played a lot of football and still relatively young.

I really do feel that Townsend has earnt a shot at a start. Davis coming on late on in the game and running at a tired defence and playing balls through to fresh attackers makes sense to me.

BUT I'm not McKenna and in McKenna we trust. Still believe we are on for the great escape.
