I think I might have done a "woke" thing today 15:00 - Jul 25 with 862 viewsbaxterbasics

Despite still being sceptical about the mass push to electric cars, and thinking the tech needs a generation to improve, and even saying as much in a discussion here a few weeks ago, I just bought me a Nissan Leaf.

I can charge for free at work, and doing the maths, this will save me more that the monthly payment, so a no brainer really.

I have a long history of only buying what I can afford in cash at the time, so sub £1000 banger after banger, drive them into the ground then take them to the scrap man. Some not even lasting a year. This is the first time I ever got into debt for a car, which I've always been reluctant to do. On this, quite eye opening how all car sale firms are now basically finance brokers who happen to throw in a car with the deal.

Malcolm Hebden took a leap, Traded gears for Nissan Leaf. No clunks, no fumes, just quiet grace, Gliding past the corner place.

"To The Kabin!" cries our eco-star, With Corrie dreams and a motor car. Rita waves with curlers spun, “Is that a Leaf? Oh Malcolm, hun!”

Through drizzle, drama, soapland lore, He hums beneath the Rovers’ door. Bet Lynch once flirted near that gate, But Malcolm’s now electrified his fate.

His bonnet gleams by Audrey’s sign, Eco-pride in every line. No petrol tantrums, no old grief— Just Malcolm, monarch of the Leaf.

So should you stroll down Weatherfield's beat, Look both ways on Rosamund Street. You may catch Malcolm—cheeky, spry— Zipping past with a battery sigh.

Very good, maybe work in a verse about range anxiety though.

It's a slippery slope!

Next you'll be posting links from the Guardian.

My name's Oldsmoker.
I was a banger addict.
I'd find a car with 3 months MOT for £25 and thrash the hell out of it knowing it would be scrap.
All those who paid £1000+ for a car only got 4 years max B4 it rotted.
I got to drive Rovers, Mercs, Jags for little money.
I realised after a few years I was killing cars, sending them to their funerals at the scrap heap.
I haven't driven a banger for over 20 years.
I now drive a 1.4 Ford Focus.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Nah, that a consumerism thing not a woke thing. If you were exceptionally nice to the salesperson that would have been a woke thing.

I’ve bought cash for my last few cars, but you’re right. Once cash got you a good deal, but they’re much more interested in signing you up on a finance plan these days. “Payments are only £x per month sir”. Oh yeah, and then the deposit and the option to buy, and you end up paying 25% more than the price. They just seem to want the depreciation covered and then the car back. Which is fine of course, it makes new cars affordable and is a good way for them to shift more new cars.

Not so interesting fun fact - I don’t know whether it’s the same now, but Port Talbot was the only place that used to be able to make the new lighter steel used in the panels. It was revolutionary at the time (we’re going back well over 10 years). I suspect that’s no longer the case.

I drive a 3 litre diesel, on beaches, over seal pups, while throwing plastic bottles in the sea.

Does amaze me the amount of people that are happy to sign up to £500pm+ car finance deals and then moan about cost of living. Seems to be so many out there that are more interested in uploading their new but not particularly impressive car for a few insta likes than creating a more affordable life for themselves.

Each to their own and all that I guess.
