Struggled a fair bit on the wrong side for him. He certainly puts in more tracking & tackling than he used to, but outside of 2 or 3 lovely bits of skill & balance, and a challenge which ultimately lead to a goal, I thought he was largely ineffective on the right side of the attack.
He is not a winger who gets down the line & hits a pacy ball across the face of the goal, his best work is when cutting inside from the left, making a little room for himself & cracking a right footed strike into the net; he doesn't have the ability to do that with his left foot, & so appears caught in 2 minds when approaching the area from the right.
He's a smashing footballer & I really hope he stays & has a great season for us, but he won't be our starter on the right of the 3, & looks to be behind Philogene now as our preferred starter (partner with Leif D) on the left side. |  | | |

With Clarke I feel like he needs a decent run in the team and an established role.
He’s clearly got a bunch of great qualities (ball at his feet and running) and he will terrify most of the lower half teams.
Was interesting Morsy saying he personally needed time to adjust when he first arrived, feels like the time is now for Clarke to move forward - especially with more breathing space than the PL allowed him. Hopefully, Clarke follows a similar path to Morsys where he can establish himself as a regular as he’s clearly very talented. |  |

Was impressed with his defensive/ball winning - absolutely has improved there.
One lovely centre of the field jinking run (I remember him doing the same at Everton) but he's just not as effective on the right and I fear we won't get the best out of him there. | | | |

Weak. He lacks strength, his decision making isn't great and he tends to run into blind alleys as a result. Two or three decent dribbles against a lower side in a PSF isn't enough. Crossing generally poor, though he didn't often get that far. Passi g also not great. I'd say he is behind Ogbene & a fit Burns, let alone Omari (if.... ).
Shame, but I just don't see him contributing. I wish I could, because he is clearly very talented.

He took the ball from deep and ran past 4 players ala hutchinson.
You also have to remember when comparing philogene to clarke. Philogene had davis working with him making excellent runs and opening himself up for 1 2s.
Clarke had johnson who again imo had a poor game.
Burns. Ogbene too are two very different players to clarke. We saw that when ogbene came on. They won't get past a man 1 on 1 but they will be a threat with pace and balls played through for them. |  |

I think so. But also. Whilst imo philogene lost his identity over the past year with all his moves. He had played that left role and fair bit. Clarke whilst he did it for Leeds he's been so used to playing left side and then KMs own version of a left sided player compared to Sunderlands to then go to the right, it's going to take a while to get used to it. If you think about crosses. He probably hadn't crossed a ball with his right foot for a fair while it'll take time to feel It again. | |

When you look at the goals he’s scored for Sunderland I just don’t see a world where he consistently plays on the right? Seems like we are overloaded with talent on the left and why I still suspect we might get a really decent fee for Broadhead over the next month that we almost begrudgingly accept. |  | | |

I thought him and Philogene were pretty good.... but still a ,little way off from what we expect. Both showed glimpses of class, but I think both need to be a bit more robust.

He did OK. There’s a player in there, but for me, I need to see him doing in week in, week out. At this moment in time I don’t see him putting the ball in the right areas. I think he’ll be in and around the group this season, but unless he puts in the graft he’s not going to be a top, top player. |  |
