Utterly staggered to learn on Sky Sports News this evening that Sunderland have now spaffed the third highest summer spending amount for newly promoted clubs, in PL history.
£135m with the caveat of potential add-ons.
We weren’t even in the top 6 spending table after last season’s spree…
Forest, Villa, Southampton, Leeds, Fulham and now Sunderland all spent more in the last 7 seasons.
My gaster is well and truly flabbered, I thought we went pound-spunking bonkers last summer…
Go figure, you do the math…cheapskate American owners etc etc

One thing about not being a returning parachute club - your wage bill and lack of previous big transfers is going to leave you with a huge amount of headroom for PSR. Downside of course is that you have to replace 90% of your starting eleven with it |  |

Did Sky put up a table? We definitely spent a good bit more on transfers over the whole season than Southampton did in 24/25 or Leeds in 20/21, or Fulham in any of their first seasons. Maybe they've done a lot of inflation-related adjustments (I didn't realise we were behind these clubs before our winter transfers kicked in).

Indeed they got more than £10 mil for Watson as well so their net spend will still be much lower then ours was (so far). Xhaka is a superb signing. Think they have a chance. | |

They're business looks really good to me and they had been out a while, plus were a mess in League 1. I still think our strategy was slightly off last year unless we had all but accepted relegation but we look in great shape for this season.

Curious. We spent £106.5m according to Transfermarkt, while Southampton reportedly spent £98.5m plus two undisclosed fees, for young players sent straight out on loan to an unheralded Turkish team. Perhaps Sky recorded our initial fees differently to other sources - recall Omari's reported fee varied from £18m-£22m on the main sites when it was announced.
The Philogene fee is where we meaningfully separated ourselves from 4th down in that table, but I didn't appreciate Sunderland are up to £135.8m already. They've spent £113.5m according to the aforementioned site, which must be behind on announcements.*

Just takes a couple of injuries for Sunderland like we had and they could be in trouble. Imagine Xhaka is out for half a season with something that would really hurt. They look like could field a strong starting XI but as we quickly found out its also finishing with a strong XI that's important. | | | |

Sort of?
In 2024-25 Sunderland, Leeds and Burnley will all have gone as close as they could to their FFP limit (though Sunderland's limit will have been way less). None of them will have extra budget leeway because they left money unspent last season.
In 2025-26 Leeds and Burnley will have already committed a lot of their PL budget to wages and transfer fees agreed over the past 2/3 seasons. But like us last year Sunderland the money already committed budget on wages and transfer fees will be far far less. | |

Ours was up to £150 million, including the winter window.
They’re about the same level as we spent, only they’ve targeted proven top flight experience.
All three promoted sides, very focussed on players with experience at a much higher level than the EFL.
Will be interesting to see how they compare to our points total. Suspect one or more will stay up. But who knows, tough league. | | | |
